Application for a Character Certificate
Model application to the headmaster/principal for a character certificate.
An application for a character certificate is written to obtain an official statement of a student’s good conduct.
How to write it
- This is an individual request, so write it in the first person with "I" and "my".
- Address it to the Headmaster and use a subject line clearly asking for a character certificate.
- State that you have passed your examination from the school and now need an official statement of your good conduct.
- Explain briefly why you need it — for example, to seek admission to a college or to apply elsewhere — as this shows a genuine purpose.
- Close politely, requesting the certificate at his earliest convenience, and sign with your name, class and roll number.

Subject: Application for a character certificate.
Sir
With due respect, I beg to state that I have recently passed the S.S.C. Examination from your school under Roll No. 105678, and I now wish to seek admission to a college for higher studies.
For this purpose I need an official character certificate from you stating my conduct and moral character during the years I studied here. During my time in this school I always tried to obey the rules, respect my teachers and behave well with everyone.
A certificate of good conduct from you will help me greatly in gaining admission and will remain a valuable testimony of my school days.
I, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to grant me a character certificate at your earliest convenience, and thus oblige.
I remain,
Sir,
Your obedient student,
Nafisa Akter
Class X, Roll No. 15
Frequently Asked Questions
A student generally needs a character certificate after passing an examination, when seeking admission to a college or applying elsewhere, as proof of good conduct during their school years.
Stating the purpose — such as college admission — shows the Headmaster that the request is genuine and helps him issue a certificate suited to that need.
It is a personal document about one student's conduct, so the application is written in the first person using "I" and signed with the student's own name, class and roll number.
