It depends on your goal. Most UK/Australian/Canadian universities ask for an overall 6.5–7.0 with no band below 6.0. Skilled migration and professional bodies often need 7.0–8.0. A Band 7 means you are a “good user” of English.

What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English proficiency test for study, work and migration. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. IELTS assesses four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and reports a score for each on a 9-band scale, plus an overall band score.

There are two versions. IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for migration, work experience and secondary education. An IELTS Test Report Form is normally valid for two years from the test date.
It is the average of your four module scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band. For example, 6.5 + 6.5 + 5.0 + 7.0 = 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25, which rounds up to an overall 6.5. Learn the exact rounding rules on our band score page.
