How to write a good composition or essay

A composition (also called an essay or free writing) is a longer piece than a paragraph and must be organised into parts. A high-scoring answer follows a simple structure:

• Introduction — introduce the topic and say why it matters, in three or four sentences.
• Body — two to four paragraphs, each with its own point (causes, importance, advantages, disadvantages, remedies), supported with examples and details.
• Conclusion — summarise your main idea and end with a thoughtful final sentence.

Which length should you use?

• 250 words — the standard length for SSC free writing and class 9–10 exams.
• 400–600 words — ideal for HSC compositions that need more depth.
• 800–1000 words — best for university admission and longer essay answers.
