A Journey by Bus (800 Words)

Introduction

Travelling is one of the greatest sources of pleasure and knowledge in human life. It refreshes the tired mind, widens our outlook and brings us close to the beauty of nature. Among the various ways of travelling, a journey by bus is perhaps the most popular and enjoyable in a country like Bangladesh, for it is cheap, convenient and allows the traveller to watch the ever-changing scenery of the land from close by. During my last winter vacation I had the opportunity to make a most delightful journey by bus from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar with my parents and my younger sister, and the memory of that journey still fills my heart with joy.

Preparation for the Journey

Since Cox's Bazar is a favourite tourist spot, we knew that buses would be crowded during the vacation. So we booked our tickets several days in advance to make sure of comfortable seats. On the morning of the journey we rose very early, said our prayers, packed our bags with clothes and food, and set out for the Gabtoli bus terminal. The terminal was already teeming with life, full of hurrying passengers, shouting hawkers, and rows of buses honking impatiently. After a short wait our shining air-conditioned coach rolled in, and we cheerfully took our reserved seats beside the wide windows.

The Journey Begins

Exactly at the scheduled time the bus started with a gentle roar. At first it moved slowly through the narrow, crowded streets of the capital, but soon it left the city behind and glided smoothly onto the broad highway. The cool, fresh breeze of the morning rushed in through the windows and touched our faces, filling every heart with a strange sense of freedom and delight. The driver put on some soft, pleasant music, and a friendly, cheerful mood spread among the passengers. Some chatted merrily, some gazed out of the windows, and children laughed with excitement.

The Beauty of the Countryside

As the bus gathered speed along the highway, the charming scenery of rural Bangladesh began to unfold before our eyes like a beautiful painting in motion. On both sides stretched vast fields of green paddy that seemed to touch the far horizon. Little rivers and canals glittered like silver ribbons under the mild winter sun, and here and there stood quiet villages shaded by mango, jackfruit, banana and tall betel-nut trees. Farmers were bending over their crops, cattle grazed lazily on the grassy banks, and groups of children waved their tiny hands at the speeding bus. The clear blue sky above and the soft golden sunshine made the whole scene wonderfully peaceful and heart-warming.

An Exciting Moment

No journey is truly memorable without a little excitement, and ours was no exception. As we neared the town of Feni, our bus suddenly ran into a long and stubborn traffic jam. Rows of buses, trucks and cars stood motionless on the road, and our coach came to a halt for nearly an hour. For a while the passengers grew restless, and some began to worry about reaching the destination in time. Our driver, however, was an experienced and patient man. He kept perfectly calm, and the moment the road became clear he drove on with remarkable skill and care, gradually making up for the lost time and easing all our worries.

A Pleasant Halt

About midday the bus stopped at a neat roadside restaurant so that the passengers might rest and take their meal. We got down, stretched our stiff limbs and breathed the open country air. There we enjoyed a simple but tasty lunch of rice, vegetables and fish, followed by cups of warm tea. The short break refreshed us completely, and with renewed energy we climbed back into the bus to continue the remaining part of our journey along the winding coastal road.

Conclusion

At last, just as the sun was sinking in the west and painting the sky with shades of gold and crimson, our bus reached the famous sea town of Cox's Bazar. The long hours of travel had made us a little tired, but the very first sight of the vast, endless blue sea drove away all our weariness in an instant. Standing before that mighty expanse of water, I felt a deep sense of wonder and happiness. The whole journey had been full of fun, beauty and fresh experience, and it taught me to love the natural charm of my dear motherland even more.
