Dialogue About Blood Donation

One friend answers the usual fears about donating blood and explains why shortages persist.

A dialogue between Nusaiba and Tasnim

Nusaiba: Tasnim, there is a blood donation camp at the college on Sunday. Will you give?

Tasnim: I want to, but I am frightened of the needle. And does it not weaken you?

Nusaiba: The needle is a few seconds. The body replaces the fluid within a day and the cells within weeks.

Tasnim: You have given before?

Nusaiba: Several times. It is far less of an event than people imagine.

Tasnim: How many times?

Nusaiba: Four times, starting when my aunt needed two bags after an operation.

Tasnim: How did you feel afterwards?

Nusaiba: Tired for an hour, and then perfectly normal. They give you juice and make you sit for fifteen minutes.

Tasnim: Is anyone allowed to donate?

Nusaiba: You must be over eighteen, above a minimum weight, and free of infection. They test and check before taking anything.

Tasnim: Why is there always a shortage if it is so simple?

Nusaiba: Because blood cannot be stored long, so it must be given continuously, not once in a crisis.

Tasnim: I had not understood that. It changes how I think about it.

Nusaiba: Come with me on Sunday and see. You can decide at the table.
