A dialogue between Nayeem and Ratul
Nayeem: Ratul, have you seen the pile of rubbish at the corner of our lane? It has been there a week.
Ratul: I hold my breath every time I pass it. Why has nobody cleared it?
Nayeem: The van comes twice a week, but people throw waste there at all hours, so it never stays empty.
Ratul: Then the problem is partly ours, not only the corporation's.
Nayeem: Exactly. And nobody separates anything. Vegetable peel, plastic and glass all go into one bag.
Ratul: Does separating really matter that much?
Nayeem: It matters a great deal. Kitchen waste can become compost, and plastic can be sold. Mixed together, both become landfill.
Ratul: I did not know kitchen waste could be composted at home.
Nayeem: My aunt does it in a drum on her roof. She uses the compost in her vegetable pots.
Ratul: And the smell?
Nayeem: Very little, if it is covered and kept dry. It is the mixing with plastic that makes waste stink.
Ratul: What could we actually do about the lane, though?
Nayeem: Two bins instead of one at the corner, and a notice asking people to separate. The ward councillor's office can be approached.
Ratul: Let us write an application, then, and get the neighbours to sign it.
Nayeem: Good. I will draft it tonight and bring it to you tomorrow.
