Accountant Resume Examples
An accounting resume is read for scope, cycle and credential. How large were the books, how fast do you close, and are you a CPA — because those three answers place you in a pay band before the reader reaches your bullet points.
Close time is the most persuasive operational number you can give. A controller is deciding whether their month-end gets faster or slower with you on the team, and "closed in five business days, down from nine" answers that before the interview.

Written for this occupation rather than adapted from a generic template. The sections below explain why it is built this way, and what to change first.
Accountant pay, demand and entry requirements
Before the resume, the market. These are the national figures for accountants, and they matter because they tell you what you are competing for and how many other applicants are competing with you.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median annual wage | $83,680 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) |
| People employed nationally | 1,449,500 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) |
| Projected growth, 2024–2034 | Faster than average (5% to 6%) |
| Projected annual openings | 124,200 |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field; CPA requires additional credit hours |
| BLS SOC code | 13-2011 |

What the job actually involves
Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.
Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.
- Inspect account books and accounting systems for efficiency, effectiveness, and use of accepted accounting procedures to record transactions.
- Collect and analyze data to detect deficient controls, duplicated effort, extravagance, fraud, or non-compliance with laws, regulations, and management policies.
- Prepare detailed reports on audit findings.
- Report to management about asset utilization and audit results, and recommend changes in operations and financial activities.
- Examine and evaluate financial and information systems, recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
- Confer with company officials about financial and regulatory matters.
- Supervise auditing of establishments, and determine scope of investigation required.
What makes a strong accountant resume
State the entity scale. Revenue size, number of entities, whether consolidation or multi-currency is involved, and whether the environment is public or private. A public-company close under SOX is a different job from a single-entity private close.
Lead with the close cycle and any improvement to it. Then the reconciliations you own, their volume, and your variance analysis — this is the recurring operational core of most accounting roles.
Be precise about the CPA. Licensed, exam-passed pending experience, sitting with a date, or not pursuing — each is a different signal and vagueness reads as evasion. It is also the single largest determinant of pay progression.
Name the ERP and your Excel depth. SAP, NetSuite, Oracle and Workday are major switching costs, and modelling ability beyond basic formulas is worth evidencing with an artefact you built.
Adapting this accountant example
The CPA appears with its licensure year, not just as three letters, because timing tells a recruiter where you are on the ladder — licensed 2023 against a 2019 degree reads as someone who worked while completing the 150-hour requirement and passed. The example also states the 150 credit hours explicitly, since that is the eligibility gate people outside accounting forget exists and hiring managers inside it always check.
Close time is the metric this role is judged on, so it leads: five business days, reduced from nine, with the mechanism named — restructuring the accrual and intercompany process. Every controller has a close calendar they are trying to shorten, and a candidate who has actually shortened one is arguing from evidence rather than enthusiasm.
Two bullets here are doing quiet risk work that a controller will notice immediately. Owning 30 balance sheet reconciliations with no aged unreconciled items is the discipline that prevents nasty year-end surprises, and coordinating the external audit with the full PBC schedule delivered on time for three consecutive years with no material adjustments is about as close to a clean bill of health as a staff accountant can offer. The fixed-asset verification that removed $400k of ghost assets is the kind of specific, checkable clean-up worth stealing the shape of.
Every detail in the document above is invented. Never send an example with placeholder facts left in it.
Keywords an applicant tracking system will look for
Most employers of accountants screen applications through software before a person reads them. The scan is looking for the vocabulary of the job, so the terms below are worth using where they are true of you — and worth leaving out where they are not, because the human read that follows will catch the difference.
- CPA · GAAP · month-end close · financial statements · general ledger · journal entries · account reconciliation · variance analysis · audit · internal controls · SOX compliance · accounts payable · accounts receivable · fixed assets · accruals · revenue recognition · ASC 606 · consolidation · tax provision · budgeting · forecasting · SAP · NetSuite · Workday · Excel modelling
Systems and software worth naming if you have used them: SAP, Workday, QuickBooks, Tableau, Alteryx.
Certification, licensing and what employers verify
The CPA is the defining credential and the clearest determinant of long-term pay. It requires 150 credit hours in most states — 30 beyond a standard bachelor's — passing all four exam sections, and a documented experience requirement that varies by state. State licensing means it is verifiable, so state your status precisely.
Other credentials serve different paths. The CMA suits management accounting and corporate finance, the CIA internal audit, and the CFE fraud examination. None substitutes for the CPA in public accounting, but each is genuinely valued in its lane.
Where you trained matters to some employers. Public accounting experience, particularly Big Four or national firm audit, is treated as a distinct signal in industry hiring, so name the firm and the client sizes you worked on if that is your background.
Mistakes that cost accountants interviews
- Omitting entity scale, so a reader cannot tell whether you closed a small single entity or a consolidated group.
- Leaving out close time, the number a hiring controller cares about most.
- Being vague about CPA status, when licensed, exam-passed and not pursuing are very different signals.
- Listing "Excel" without evidencing depth, in a field where modelling ability separates candidates.
- Describing duties without a single figure — accounting is the one field where quantification should be effortless.
Where this role leads next
BLS projects faster than average growth with around 124,200 openings a year across 1.45 million accountants and auditors, and a median of $83,680 — the highest in this batch. Demand has held up despite automation because the work moving is data entry, while judgement, controls and reporting are not.
The ladder runs staff, senior, accounting manager, controller and CFO in industry, or senior, manager and partner in public accounting. The CPA is the gate on most of it. Specialisations that pay above general accounting are technical accounting and revenue recognition, tax, internal audit and financial systems, the last of which pairs accounting knowledge with ERP implementation and is unusually well paid.
Frequently asked questions
Entity scale and revenue size, your month-end close time with any improvement, the reconciliations you own, audit coordination, your ERP by name, and your precise CPA status. Those place you in a pay band before the reader gets to detail.
The BLS median annual wage was $83,680 in the May 2025 OEWS release, across roughly 1.45 million accountants and auditors. CPAs earn materially more over a career, and technical accounting, tax and financial systems specialisms pay above general roles.
No — many accountants build good careers without one. But it is the gate on most senior positions, required for signing audit opinions, and the clearest determinant of long-term pay. It needs 150 credit hours, four exam sections and a state experience requirement.
Precisely. Say which sections you have passed and your scheduled dates for the rest, or "exam complete, experience requirement pending" if that is where you are. Employers understand each stage; vagueness is what reads badly.
BLS projects faster than average growth, which is a strong signal. Automation is absorbing transaction processing and reconciliation preparation, while judgement, controls, technical accounting and advisory work are not. The roles at risk are the ones that never involved judgement.
