Engineering admission is a world of its own in Bangladesh — memorising MCQs will not get you through; you must be able to solve maths and physics problems yourself. BUET’s test runs in two stages and is fully written, so its preparation differs from the rest.
The main engineering universities and their routes
| Institution | Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BUET | Two stages — a pre-selection MCQ, then a final written test | The most competitive engineering admission in the country |
| CUET, KUET, RUET (CKRUET) | One combined admission test | One application covers all three |
| DUET | A separate test for diploma engineers | A BSc in engineering after a polytechnic diploma |
| IUT | Its own admission test | An international university under the OIC |
| BUTEX | Its own admission test | Textile engineering |
| Science and technology universities | Many belong to the GST cluster | Apply through cluster Unit A |
Eligibility
- Higher Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at HSC are compulsory.
- Each of those three carries its own minimum-GPA condition, which varies by university.
- BUET and most engineering universities restrict applications by HSC passing year, so a second attempt is usually not possible.
- Applying for architecture means an additional freehand-drawing test.
- DUET requires a completed polytechnic diploma in engineering.
Mark distributions, eligibility rules and fees are revised almost every year. Always cross-check against the current official circular from the university or admission committee before you apply.
BUET’s two stages
- Stage one — pre-selection: an MCQ test whose purpose is to shortlist a limited number of candidates.
- Only those who clear it sit the final test.
- Stage two — the final written test: solving problems in maths, physics and chemistry.
- Architecture candidates sit an additional freehand-drawing paper.
- The merit order and departmental allocation come from the final result.
MCQ drilling alone will not prepare you for BUET’s written paper — you need the habit of solving problems on paper, step by step.
How to prepare
- Solve every chapter’s problems in Higher Maths 1st and 2nd Paper by hand — this is the biggest single factor.
- In Physics, give extra time to kinematics, electricity and modern physics.
- Solve at least 15 timed numerical problems a day.
- Work through ten years of BUET and CKRUET papers — the style is fairly consistent.
- If architecture interests you, practise drawing daily — it is a separate skill.
- Apply to the cluster and other universities too — relying on BUET alone is a serious risk.
Frequently asked questions
Higher Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at HSC, each meeting a minimum-GPA condition. Without Higher Mathematics you cannot apply for engineering at all.
CKRUET is the combined admission test of CUET, KUET and RUET — one application and one exam covering all three engineering universities.
Usually not. BUET and most engineering universities accept only candidates from a specified HSC year. DUET is the exception, as it admits diploma holders.
