Studying without knowing the mark distribution is shooting in the dark. Once you know which section carries how many marks, how many questions you must answer and how long you get for each part, both your preparation and your time management in the hall get much easier.
The standard SSC mark distribution
Most SSC subjects carry 100 marks. The split depends on whether the subject has a separate practical.

English 1st and 2nd Paper have no creative questions — all 100 marks are skills-based written questions. Confirm each subject’s final split against the NCTB’s published mark distribution.
How a creative question is built
Every creative question opens with a stimulus, followed by four parts — (a), (b), (c) and (d). Together they carry 10 marks, and each part tests a different ability.

Parts (a) and (b) come straight from the textbook — never lose those 3 marks. Always end part (d) with a concluding judgement, or you will not get full marks.
How many questions to answer
- The creative section usually has 11 questions, of which you answer 7 (7 × 10 = 70).
- In subjects with a practical you answer 5 of 8 questions (5 × 10 = 50).
- The MCQ section has 30 questions of 1 mark each in 30 minutes (or 25 questions in 25 minutes where it is worth 25).
- The creative section usually gets 2 hours 30 minutes, and follows the MCQ sitting.
- There is no negative marking in the MCQ section — so never leave a circle blank.
How to divide your time in the hall
- Spend the first 5 minutes reading the whole paper, choosing your 7 questions and jotting their numbers down.
- Write your strongest question first — it builds confidence and warms up your hand.
- Give each question at most 20 minutes — 140 minutes for seven — and keep 10 minutes to review.
- If time runs short, at least put the key points of an unfinished answer in bullet form.
- In the last 5 minutes, re-check the roll, registration, subject and set codes on the OMR and answer script.

In a subject without a practical it is 70 for creative questions and 30 for MCQs. In a subject with a practical it is 50 creative, 25 MCQ and 25 practical.
No — there is no negative marking in the SSC MCQ section. So it always pays to fill in your best guess.

Where a subject carries separate practical marks you must pass the theory and the practical separately. Failing either means failing that subject.
