Computer and Office Skills

Government or private, almost every job notice asks for computer skills, and many recruitments hold a separate practical test. Yet these are the quickest skills to acquire — a few weeks of regular practice is enough.
What you must be able to do
| Software | The minimum you need |
|---|---|
| Word processor | Formatting, paragraph and page setup, tables, headers and footers, exporting to PDF, print settings |
| Spreadsheet (Excel) | SUM, AVERAGE, IF, COUNTIF, VLOOKUP, sorting and filtering, charts, cell formatting |
| Presentations | Slide layouts, inserting images and charts, transitions, running a show |
| Typing | Bengali (Avro or Bijoy) and English — accuracy first, then speed |
| Internet and email | Writing a professional email, attachments, cloud drives, filling online forms |
A government practical test usually checks Bengali and English typing speed plus basic Word and Excel work. Fifteen minutes of typing practice a day builds the speed within weeks.
The Excel tasks that come up most
- Building and organising lists — sorting, filtering and freezing panes.
- Calculations — SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and percentages.
- Conditional work — using IF and COUNTIF for results or attendance.
- Matching two lists — VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP.
- Making charts and preparing a printable report.
Staying safe online
- Use a separate strong password for every important account, and turn on two-step verification.
- Do not click unfamiliar links or download unknown files.
- Nobody legitimate ever asks for your OTP or password — if they do, it is a scam.
- Keep cloud backups of important documents and files.
- Never post personal details or photographs of documents on social media.
