Bank recruitment runs in three stages — an MCQ preliminary, a written paper and a viva. Most state-bank exams are now conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM), which has made the question style fairly consistent.
The preliminary — how the 100 marks split
- 100 MCQs, usually in one hour.
- 0.25 deducted per wrong answer — four wrong answers cancel a correct one.
- All four carry equal weight, so weakness in any one directly costs you 25 marks.
- Maths eats the most time, and it is where most candidates lose it.
| Subject | Marks |
|---|---|
| Bangla | 25 |
| English | 25 |
| Mathematics | 25 |
| General knowledge and ICT | 25 |
| Total | 100 |
Because each subject carries an equal 25, the strategy is clear: you cannot drop any of them. In the BCS a weak subject can be offset; in a bank preliminary it cannot.
The written exam and the viva
| Stage | Marks | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Written | 200, usually in two hours | Focus writing, essay or argument, translation both ways, and maths |
| Viva | Usually 25 at state banks | Banking concepts, economics, current affairs and personality |
Recruitment syllabuses, mark schemes, age limits and fees change from one circular to the next. Always cross-check against the current official circular before you apply.
Turning the scheme into priorities
- Split your time evenly across the four subjects — none can be neglected.
- Build speed in maths: 25 timed problems a day.
- For English, grammar and vocabulary — the same preparation serves the written paper too.
- In general knowledge, weight current economic and banking affairs most heavily.
- Start practising focus writing and translation while still preparing for the preliminary.
Frequently asked questions
Usually 25 marks each — Bangla 25, English 25, maths 25, and general knowledge with ICT 25, for 100 in total.
Usually 0.25 per wrong answer, though the rate can differ between circulars — read the exam instructions carefully.
A 200-mark paper typically has focus writing, an essay or argument, Bangla–English translation and maths, with the content centred on economics, banking and current affairs.
