A plumber resume example covering licence class, apprenticeship hours and the service versus new construction split, with current BLS pay and demand figures for a licensed trade.

Plumber Resume Examples

Plumbing resumes are read licence-first, exactly like electrical. Class, state and apprenticeship hours decide what a contractor can put you on and whether you can work unsupervised, so those belong in the opening line rather than buried near the education section.

The second sort is service versus new construction. A service plumber diagnoses problems in occupied homes under time pressure with a customer watching; a new construction plumber runs rough-in to plan at volume. Both are skilled, and contractors hire for one.

What the job actually involves

Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.

Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.

  • Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to specifications.
  • Assemble pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement.
  • Cut, thread, or hammer pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches.
  • Install underground storm, sanitary, or water piping systems, extending piping as needed.
  • Lay out full scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, or related equipment, according to blueprints.
  • Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, or fixtures.
  • Shut off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches.

What makes a strong plumber resume

Open with licence class, state and hours. "Journeyman Plumber (Ohio), 8,000 apprenticeship hours" answers the qualifying question immediately.

Split service, new construction and commercial, and say roughly what share each was. Add the sectors — residential, multifamily, light commercial or industrial — since piping scale differs enormously between them.

Name materials and methods. Copper soldering, PEX, CPVC, cast iron and press fittings are different skills, and a contractor working an older housing stock needs someone comfortable with cast iron and lead joints.

Include the specialisms that pay: gas piping, backflow prevention certification, medical gas, hydro jetting and camera inspection. Each is a separate permission or capability, and each adds work you can be assigned.

Adapting this plumber example

The service-versus-construction split is stated as a percentage — roughly 60% service, 40% new construction — because they are close to different trades. Service work is diagnostic, customer-facing and unpredictable; new construction is rough-in from blueprints against an inspection schedule. A contractor hiring for one is screening for it specifically, and a resume that blurs the two invites the reader to assume you are weak at whichever they need.

Backflow prevention has its own certification line because it is separately licensed, separately renewed and separately billable. Testing 60+ commercial devices annually and filing the reports with the water authority is recurring revenue a shop can schedule around, which makes it one of the few plumbing credentials that changes what you are worth rather than just what you may do. Gas piping is listed for the same reason: it is a distinct qualification and jobs are assigned on it.

First-time inspection pass rates appear twice — rough-in on 30+ units, and a repipe series completed without rework — because inspection failures are the expensive event in this trade. A failed rough-in stalls drywall and every trade behind it, so a plumber with a clean first-pass record is protecting the schedule, not just doing the work. That is the argument a general contractor actually responds to.

The camera-and-hydro-jetting bullet is the diagnostic counterpart. Clearing main lines is routine; identifying six root intrusions that required excavation is the judgement that turns a service call into a properly scoped repair rather than a callback in three months. If your work is mostly service, that pattern — what you found, and what it changed — is the strongest shape available to you, since service work rarely produces the neat volume metrics that construction does.

Every detail in the document above is invented. Never send an example with placeholder facts left in it.

Keywords an applicant tracking system will look for

Most employers of plumbers screen applications through software before a person reads them. The scan is looking for the vocabulary of the job, so the terms below are worth using where they are true of you — and worth leaving out where they are not, because the human read that follows will catch the difference.

  • journeyman plumber · apprentice plumber · master plumber · plumbing licence · apprenticeship hours · rough-in · finish plumbing · copper soldering · PEX · CPVC · cast iron · drain cleaning · hydro jetting · camera inspection · water heater installation · tankless · backflow prevention · gas piping · code compliance · IPC · UPC · blueprint reading · service plumbing · new construction · commercial plumbing

Systems and software worth naming if you have used them: Intuit QuickBooks, CAD software, Bentley AutoPIPE.

Certification, licensing and what employers verify

Plumbing is licensed at state or local level, typically apprentice, journeyman and master, with documented hours and an exam at each step. Master licences additionally allow permit pulling and running your own contracting business in most jurisdictions, which is why they command a premium.

Specialist certifications add assignable work rather than replacing the licence. Backflow prevention testing, medical gas installation and gas piping qualification are each separately certified, and each opens a category of job a contractor would otherwise subcontract.

Reciprocity between states is inconsistent, as with electrical. Name your licence state plainly, and check the receiving board before applying across a line — an unrecognised licence can mean re-testing rather than a simple transfer.

Mistakes that cost plumbers interviews

  • Omitting licence class, state and hours, the qualifying facts a contractor checks first.
  • Not splitting service from new construction, which are hired for separately.
  • Leaving materials vague when older housing stock demands cast iron and lead-joint competence.
  • Skipping certifications such as backflow or gas, each of which is billable work you can be assigned.
  • Listing tools owned rather than systems and materials worked — the truck inventory is assumed.

Where this role leads next

BLS projects faster than average growth with around 44,000 openings a year across 504,500 plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters. Demand is supported by ageing infrastructure and by a well-documented shortage of licensed tradespeople.

The ladder runs journeyman to master, then foreman, estimator or contractor. Master licensure is the pivotal step, since it permits permit pulling and running your own business — the route by which plumbing incomes most often move well above the median. The specialisms that pay above general plumbing are medical gas, industrial pipefitting, steamfitting and backflow, each gated by a separate certification.
