A welding resume is a list of processes, positions and certifications — in that order. A shop foreman needs to know whether you can run TIG on stainless, whether you have passed a 6G pipe test, and to which code. Everything else is secondary.

The pay spread in this trade is wide and driven entirely by that list. Structural production welding sits near the median; certified pipe welding, aerospace TIG and underwater work sit far above it. What you can weld, to what standard, in what position, is the whole argument.

What the job actually involves

Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.

Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.

  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
  • Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
  • Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.

What makes a strong welder resume

List processes with materials and thickness ranges. SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and FCAW are different skills; TIG on thin stainless or aluminium is different again from stick on heavy structural steel. Be specific.

State positions and certifications with the code. 1G through 6G, and whether tested to AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX or a customer specification — a 6G pipe certification is a serious credential and should not be buried.

Say whether your certifications are current and who holds them. Welding certifications are typically maintained by the employer and lapse after a period without welding to that procedure. Naming the date avoids an assumption that they have expired.

Include inspection and fit-up. Blueprint and weld symbol reading, fit-up work, and any visual inspection or NDT familiarity separate a welder who can work from a drawing from one who needs everything tacked up first.

Adapting this welder example

Welding resumes live or die on the certification line, and this one is written the way a shop foreman reads it: process, code, position and currency. A 6G pipe certification to ASME Section IX is the hardest common position — pipe fixed at 45 degrees, welded all the way round — and holding it current tells a fabricator you can be put on process piping today. "Certified welder" without the code and position is close to meaningless, because certifications are specific to both and they expire.

Processes are listed individually — SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW — with the materials attached, because the combinations are what get assigned. GTAW on thin-wall stainless and aluminium for sanitary and food-grade work is a different job from FCAW on structural steel, and a shop bidding sanitary work screens for the first specifically. Naming materials alongside processes is what turns a list into a capability statement.

The rejection-rate bullet is the quality metric this trade actually has: under 2% against a shop benchmark of 5%, verified by visual inspection and periodic radiographic testing. Naming the verification method matters, because a self-reported rejection rate means little while an RT-verified one is checkable. On code work a rejected weld means grinding it out and redoing it, so the figure translates directly into cost the shop avoided.

Fit-up is worth stating separately from welding, and most welders forget to. Reading blueprints and weld symbols to complete fit-up independently — tacking and alignment for assemblies up to 12 feet — means you can be handed a drawing rather than a tacked assembly, which roughly doubles what a shop can do with you. The apprentice-training bullet closes on the same note as the other trades: bringing two welders through their first certification tests is evidence of judgement, not just hands.

Certification, licensing and what employers verify

Welding certification works differently from trade licensing. You are certified to a specific procedure — process, material, thickness, position and code — rather than holding a general licence, and the certification is usually maintained by the employer through periodic requalification.

That has a practical consequence: certifications lapse if you have not welded to that procedure within a set period, commonly six months. Always state when yours were last current, because a reader will otherwise assume the worst.

AWS certification is the recognised structural standard and ASME Section IX governs pressure piping and vessels. A 6G pipe ticket is the credential that most reliably moves pay, because it demonstrates all-position competence on the hardest common test.

Mistakes that cost welders interviews

  • Writing "welding experience" without naming processes, positions and codes — the only things that matter here.
  • Omitting the certification date, when lapsed tickets are the default assumption otherwise.
  • Not stating materials and thickness, since TIG on thin aluminium and stick on heavy plate are barely the same job.
  • Leaving out blueprint and weld symbol reading, which separates a welder from someone who needs everything set up.
  • Ignoring the rejection or repair rate, a measured quality signal that few welders quote.
