How weighted category grading works
Each category contributes its weight to the final grade rather than its size in assignments. Ten homework tasks worth 20 percent between them count for exactly that, whether there are ten of them or forty.
The calculation multiplies each category score by its weight, adds the results, and divides by the weights included. That last step is what makes the figure meaningful mid-term: dividing by 100 when only 65 percent of the grade has been assessed understates where you stand, sometimes dramatically.

The 88.3% is 57 divided by 0.65 — the graded portion only. Treating the final as a zero would give 57%, which is not a fact about your performance.
Why your learning management system disagrees
Course platforms differ in how they treat ungraded work, and the setting is rarely visible to students. Some show a running average across graded items only, some count unsubmitted work as zero, and some do neither until the instructor changes a setting.
That is the usual explanation for a grade that drops sharply for no reason, or one that looks implausibly high in week three. When the platform and this calculator disagree, the difference is almost always the treatment of ungraded categories rather than an arithmetic error in either.
When the weights do not add to 100
The calculator flags this because it is common and it matters. A syllabus that lists categories totalling 105 or 95 percent is usually a drafting error, but occasionally it is deliberate — extra credit built into the structure, or a category the instructor intends to drop.
Either way it is worth asking rather than assuming, because the difference changes what your current grade actually is. If the weights are wrong in the syllabus and right in the platform, the platform is what your transcript will follow.
Syllabus rules the arithmetic does not know about
A weighted average is only as accurate as the rules you feed it, and syllabi routinely contain adjustments that no calculator can infer. The common ones are worth checking before you trust any figure.
- A dropped lowest score. If the lowest quiz is discarded, recalculate that category without it before entering the score — the difference is often a full percentage point on the final grade.
- A replacement rule, where a strong final exam overrides a weaker midterm. Under that rule your midterm score may not be in the calculation at all.
- A minimum exam threshold. Some courses require a passing score on the final regardless of the weighted total, which means a comfortable average does not guarantee a pass.
- Attendance or participation as a graded category. It is easy to forget because it is not an assignment, but it carries weight like any other.
- Extra credit applied to a category rather than to the overall grade, which changes that category score rather than adding points at the end.
Where the syllabus and the course platform disagree, the platform is usually what the registrar receives — but ask rather than assume.
Using this to plan rather than to worry
The practical use of a mid-term grade is deciding where the next ten hours of work should go. A category with a large weight and a poor score is worth more attention than one where you are already strong, and the arithmetic makes that obvious in a way instinct does not.
It also tells you when a course is effectively settled. If 80 percent of the grade is assessed and you are comfortably inside a band, the marginal hour is better spent on a course where the outcome is still genuinely open.
Run it again after each major assessment rather than once at the end — the value is in the decisions it changes.
