Welder Cover Letter Examples

A welder is hired off a test plate. Whatever the letter says, a shop will put you in a booth, give you a coupon and either bend it or send it for x-ray — so the letter has exactly one job, which is to get you to the test.

The example below is written by a certified welder in structural and pipe fabrication, applying to a pipe fabrication shop. All details are invented.

Letter

I am applying for the pipe welder position. I hold a current 6G pipe certification to ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 structural, and I run SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW across carbon steel, stainless and aluminium — six years, mostly fabrication shop with some field work.

My weld rejection rate is under 2% against a 5% shop benchmark. In fairness, a good part of that is fit-up: where I have worked, the fitters are strong and the joints arrive right. Poor fit-up will raise anyone’s reject rate, and I would want to know how fit-up is handled before quoting you a number for your shop.

GTAW root with SMAW fill and cap on stainless is where I am strongest, and 6G is the position I test in because it covers the rest. I read prints and WPS documents and I stop and ask rather than guess when a WPS does not match what is in front of me.

I have my own hood, leathers and hand tools, and I can test whenever suits you. I would rather be judged on a coupon than on this letter.

Declining to promise a rejection rate for an unfamiliar shop, because fit-up quality is not the welder’s to control, is the credibility line of the letter.

The weld test decides it, so write to reach the booth

Welding is one of the few trades with a genuinely objective entry examination. You are put on a coupon in a position, and the result is bent, x-rayed or ultrasonically tested. It either passes or it does not, and no amount of writing changes the outcome.

That makes this the shortest useful letter in the collection. Process, position, code, material, availability — five facts, delivered without decoration, plus an offer to test whenever they like.

Where the letter does earn something is in getting scheduled ahead of other applicants and in avoiding a wasted test. A shop that needs 6G pipe in stainless does not want to spend a booth hour discovering you test in 3G on carbon steel.

The example ends by inviting the test directly. In a trade where the demonstration is definitive, offering it first is the natural close and reads as confidence rather than as bravado.

Process, position and material are the three coordinates

Every welding job can be located by three facts, and applications that omit any of them force the reader to guess.

Process: SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (flux-cored) and GTAW (TIG) are different skills with different learning curves, and GTAW in particular does not come for free with the others.

Position: 1G through 4G for plate and 1G through 6G for pipe, with 6G — a fixed 45-degree pipe joint — being the position that qualifies you for most others. Naming the position you certify in is more informative than any adjective about skill level.

Material: carbon steel, stainless and aluminium behave differently enough that experience does not transfer cleanly, and thickness range matters too. Thin-wall stainless tube and heavy structural plate are barely the same job.

Say which position you test in, not merely which you have welded. Shops schedule the booth around it.

Codes: what transfers, and what does not

Certification is to a code and a procedure, not to a job title. ASME Section IX governs pressure piping and vessels; AWS D1.1 covers structural steel; API 1104 covers pipelines; D1.5 covers bridges. They are not interchangeable and shops know which they need.

Say who certified you and when. Welder qualifications lapse if the process is unused beyond a defined period, and many shops require a re-test on hire regardless of what you hold, so currency is worth stating plainly.

A crucial and often misunderstood point: a certification usually belongs to the employer who qualified you, and a new shop will re-qualify you to their own WPS. Writing as though your card is portable in every direction signals inexperience.

What does transfer is the demonstrated ability to pass. A welder with a history of passing tests to multiple codes is offering evidence about the next test, which is exactly what the shop is trying to predict.

Rejection rate depends on fit-up

Weld rejection rate — the proportion of welds failing visual, x-ray or ultrasonic inspection — is the quality metric in fabrication, and it is genuinely useful.

It is also substantially determined by joint preparation. Bevel angle, root gap, alignment and cleanliness arrive at the welder from the fitters, and a bad joint will raise the reject rate of a good welder. Anyone who has worked in a shop where fit-up is weak knows this intimately.

The example gives the figure, credits the fitters and then declines to promise the same number at an unfamiliar shop. That last part is unusual and is the strongest sentence in the letter, because it demonstrates understanding of the production system rather than of one’s own hands.

It also opens a question worth asking at interview. How fit-up is handled, whether welders fit their own joints, and how rework is charged all determine what your reject rate will look like and, in some pay structures, what you will earn.

Shop, field and pipeline are three different lives

Fabrication shop work is indoors, repetitive, close to consistent and generally stable. Field work is weather, positions you would not choose and travel. Pipeline work pays the most and asks for the most, with long stretches away and testing that is unforgiving.

Say which you are applying for and what you have done. A shop welder applying to field work should acknowledge what changes: overhead in the rain, wind on GMAW, working from a lift, and being unable to reposition the work.

Structural, pressure, sanitary and aerospace work have different tolerances and different documentation burdens. Sanitary stainless for food or pharmaceutical service in particular requires cleanliness practices most structural welders have never needed.

Fabrication skills beyond welding are worth listing: print reading, layout, fitting, cutting with torch or plasma, grinding and finishing. Many shops want a fabricator who welds rather than a welder who waits for joints.

Distortion control is the experienced welder’s argument. Sequencing passes, balancing heat across a joint and knowing when to tack more and weld less is what keeps a fabricated assembly within tolerance, and it is the reason a shop pays for years rather than for a certification card. If you have straightened someone else’s work, that is worth a clause.

Gear, travel and the close

The practical facts are short and they decide scheduling.

  • Say what you own — hood, leathers, gloves, hand tools — and whether you have a rig if the work calls for one.
  • State your travel and per-diem position honestly, since field and pipeline work depends on it entirely.
  • Confirm any safety training: OSHA card, confined space, fall protection, and a current respirator fit test if you have one.
  • Name the inspection you have worked under — visual, x-ray, ultrasonic — because welders used to being x-rayed weld differently.
  • Offer the test and give your availability for it. That is the whole close, and it is the strongest one in this trade.
