A service manager hires on two numbers and one credential: your flat-rate efficiency, your comeback rate and your ASE certifications. The letter’s job is to give all three with enough context that they are believed.

The example below is written by an ASE Master technician applying to a dealership with an EV programme. All details are invented.

I am applying for the technician position with your dealership. I am ASE Master certified across A1 to A8 with the L1 advanced engine performance credential, high-voltage EV certified, and I have seven years across dealership and independent shops.

I average 118% flat-rate efficiency with a comeback rate under 2% against a 5% shop benchmark. The efficiency number needs context: it depends substantially on what dispatch hands me. A technician given warranty diagnostic work will not post the same percentage as one given brake and tyre jobs, however good they are, and I have had a favourable mix.

The comeback rate is the number I would rather be judged on, and it is the one I control. I also take the vehicles other shops could not diagnose — around fifteen a year — which pays badly on flat rate and is the reason I want a shop where diagnostic time is respected.

Naming dispatch as the driver of flat-rate efficiency, then offering the comeback rate instead, is the most credible move available in a flat-rate trade.

ASE certifications are the filter and the pay band

ASE certification is the industry’s common language, and it is specific. A1 through A8 cover engine repair, transmissions, drivetrain, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. Holding all eight earns Master status.

List them precisely rather than describing them. "ASE Master, A1–A8, L1" tells a service manager exactly what you have; "ASE certified" could mean a single test passed years ago.

The advanced credentials matter disproportionately. L1 for advanced engine performance, L2 for electronic diesel and L3 for hybrid and electric vehicle specialism each open work that most technicians in the shop cannot take, which is why they change your rate.

Manufacturer training is the parallel track. Ford, Toyota, GM, Honda and the German brands each run their own certification ladders, and dealership hiring weighs brand-specific training heavily — sometimes more than ASE — because it maps directly to warranty work.

Flat rate is the system you are being hired into

Most technician pay is flat rate: a job is assigned a book time, and you are paid that time whether it takes you longer or shorter. It rewards speed, repetition and familiarity, and it penalises diagnosis.

Understanding this system is part of demonstrating competence. A technician who talks about efficiency percentages knows what the shop measures; one who talks about hours worked does not, and the difference is audible to a service manager immediately.

Give your efficiency as a percentage against 100%. Anything above 100% means you beat book time on average, which is what the shop is buying.

Say what pay structure you want. Some technicians prefer hourly with a diagnostic budget, some prefer flat rate, and shops vary. Stating a preference avoids the common failure where a strong diagnostic technician joins a high-volume flat-rate shop and leaves in four months.

Efficiency depends on what dispatch hands you

This is the concession that makes the rest of a technician’s letter credible, and every service manager knows it is true.

A technician handed a run of brake jobs, tyres and scheduled maintenance will post a high efficiency percentage because those jobs have generous book times and no surprises. A technician handed warranty diagnosis, intermittent electrical faults and comebacks from other shops will post a lower number while doing harder work.

The example says this outright and then redirects to the metric it controls. That is a stronger position than defending a number, and it opens the conversation the applicant actually wants to have — about how work is dispatched in the new shop.

It is also a practical question to ask. How dispatch works, whether diagnostic time is paid separately, and how comebacks are charged are the three things that determine whether a good technician makes money at a given shop.

Comeback rate is the number that survives scrutiny

A comeback — a vehicle returning for the same complaint — costs the shop the labour twice, costs the customer their day, and is tracked by name.

Under 2% against a 5% shop benchmark is a specific and checkable claim, and unlike efficiency it is not much affected by what you are assigned. It reflects whether you verified the repair before releasing the car.

Describe your verification practice rather than asserting thoroughness: a road test on the same complaint conditions, a scan after clearing codes, checking for the second failure that caused the first. These are behaviours a foreman recognises, and they are the difference between a repair that is finished and one that is merely completed.

The related claim is diagnostic reputation. Taking the fifteen vehicles a year that other shops could not solve is a real distinction, and being honest that this work pays badly on flat rate — as the example is — is what makes the claim land rather than sound like self-promotion.

EV and ADAS are the argument for your next rate

The vehicle fleet is changing faster than the technician workforce, and shops are short of people who can safely work on high-voltage systems or calibrate driver-assistance sensors.

High-voltage certification is not optional for this work — it is a safety qualification with real consequences — so state it with currency and say what you have actually done: battery service, inverter diagnosis, insulation resistance testing.

ADAS calibration is the parallel opportunity. Radar and camera systems need recalibration after routine work like a windscreen replacement or an alignment, most shops are still sending it out, and a technician who can do it in-house keeps revenue.

Diesel, hybrid and advanced driver-assistance work all follow the same logic: each is a lane where demand exceeds supply. Naming which you want to develop tells a service manager you are planning a career rather than looking for a bay.

Software is the part nobody trained for. Module programming, flashes that fail halfway, subscription-gated manufacturer portals and vehicles that arrive with a fault that only exists in a calibration file are now routine, and a technician who is comfortable there is doing work that many experienced hands quietly avoid. Say so if it describes you — service managers are short of it.

Tools, shop type and the close

Technician hiring turns on practical facts that are awkward to discover late.

  • Say what tools you own. A full box represents years of investment and shops assume you bring it; specialty equipment is usually theirs.
  • Name the diagnostic platforms you have used and the manufacturer software you are trained on.
  • Be clear about dealership versus independent. Warranty procedure, parts availability and pay plans differ, and each suits different technicians.
  • Confirm your driving record — you will be road-testing customer vehicles, and insurance decides part of the hire.
  • Offer to work through a diagnostic case with the foreman. It is the closest thing to a weld test this trade has.
