IELTS Grammar: The Passive Voice

The passive is useful for describing processes (Task 1) and for formal, objective writing.

The rules with examples

  • Form: be + past participle: “The data were collected over ten years.”
  • Process description: “The beans are then roasted and ground.”
  • Objective tone: “It is widely believed that…”

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Overusing the passive, which can sound heavy — mix with active sentences.
  • Wrong participle: “The report was wrote” → “was written”.
