Bangladesh is on the list of least developed countries in Austria’s Studienbeitragsverordnung (Tuition Fee Ordinance), so Bangladeshi degree students are permanently exempt from tuition at public universities for the entire duration of their studies — and the waiver is applied automatically, with no separate application. You pay only the ÖH student-union fee each semester (about €26.20, accident insurance included). For comparison, without the exemption other non-EU students pay €726.72 per semester. The exception: Fachhochschulen (universities of applied sciences) and private universities set their own fees and fall outside the ordinance.
With tuition at zero, your real cost is essentially living expenses — about €900–€1,200 a month in Vienna and less in smaller cities such as Graz, Linz or Innsbruck. Add the ÖH fee (~€26 per semester), health insurance (around €70 a month) and the residence permit fees. The permit requires proof of about €12,000 for the year, and 20 hours of part-time work a week can cover a good share of that.
For studies longer than six months Austria does not issue a classic “student visa” — you apply for the Aufenthaltsbewilligung–Studierende, a residence permit for students. From Bangladesh this is filed at the Austrian embassy in New Delhi and a decision usually takes 8–12 weeks (sometimes longer), so start early.
You generally need to show about €12,000 for the year (assessed monthly) — through a bank account, blocked account, scholarship or sponsorship. The monthly rate differs slightly for applicants under and over 24, so confirm the embassy’s current figure when you apply.
For English-taught programmes — many exist at master’s level and at Fachhochschulen — IELTS 6.0–6.5 is enough and German is not mandatory. German-taught programmes require ÖSD or Goethe B2–C1. In practice, though, German is close to essential for the 20-hour part-time work and for daily life.
