Passage: The rise of urban rooftop gardens

Across many crowded cities, residents are converting flat rooftops into small gardens. Supporters argue that these green spaces cool buildings in summer, grow fresh vegetables, and give city dwellers a rare connection to nature. Critics, however, point out that rooftop gardens can be expensive to build and require waterproofing to prevent leaks. Despite the cost, several city governments now offer grants to encourage the practice, and studies suggest the gardens can noticeably reduce a building’s energy use.
