Passage: The return of the bicycle

Once dismissed as old-fashioned, the bicycle is enjoying a remarkable revival in cities worldwide. Faced with traffic congestion and air pollution, many local governments have built protected cycle lanes and launched bike-sharing schemes. Health experts welcome the trend, noting that regular cycling reduces the risk of heart disease. Critics warn, however, that without safe infrastructure, encouraging cycling in busy traffic can be dangerous. Even so, sales of bicycles have climbed steadily, and in some European cities cycling now rivals the car for short journeys.
