Four to eight weeks of focused practice is typical if your English is already at an upper-intermediate level. Start with a diagnostic test so you can target your weakest section.
TOEFL Practice — Sample Questions & a Study Plan
The fastest way to raise a TOEFL score is deliberate practice: learn each section's task types, drill them, and take full timed tests on a computer. This page gives you original sample questions in the official format and a study plan you can follow.
Practise on screen, not on paper — the real test is entirely typed and read from a monitor, and stamina over two hours is part of the challenge.
A four-week study plan
- Week 1 — Learn the format of all four sections and take one full diagnostic test to find your weakest area.
- Week 2 — Drill Reading and Listening question types daily; build academic vocabulary from real articles and lectures.
- Week 3 — Focus on Speaking and Writing: record and time answers, and get feedback against the scoring criteria.
- Week 4 — Take two full timed practice tests on a computer and review every mistake by question type.
Where to practise
- Official ETS TOEFL practice tests and the free TOEFL practice sets — the closest match to the real test.
- Reputable academic reading and listening (news features, university lectures) to build stamina and vocabulary.
- A timer for every session, so pacing becomes automatic before test day.
