Overview

MEXT (Monbukagakusho) is the Japanese education ministry’s scholarship, and it is not one programme but seven: research students at master’s and PhD level, undergraduates, college of technology, specialised training college, Japanese studies, teacher training and the Young Leaders Programme. Each carries its own age limit, eligibility rules and monthly rate.

There are two doors in from Bangladesh. Under Embassy Recommendation your application goes through the Ministry of Education and the embassy itself runs the written exams and interview. Under University Recommendation a Japanese university nominates you directly — no embassy exam, but you must first secure a professor’s agreement to supervise you.

What the scholarship covers

  • Full exemption from tuition, admission and entrance-examination fees
  • A monthly allowance of ¥143,000–¥145,000 for research students
  • Return airfare between Bangladesh and Japan
  • Preparatory Japanese language training where the course requires it
  • A grant, not a loan — nothing is repayable, and there is no obligation to return home

Eligibility

  • Citizenship of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan — Bangladesh qualifies
  • An age limit set per category and counted from a stated date of birth each cycle
  • A strong academic record — in practice Bangladesh applicants are filtered around 3.5/4.0 and above
  • Ability to study in Japanese or English, and willingness to learn Japanese
  • Medical certification of fitness to study in Japan

  1. 01.Pick your category

Research, undergraduate, technology college — terms and rates differ, so settle this first.

  2. 02.Choose your route

Embassy or university recommendation — the second needs a professor lined up first.

  3. 03.Documents and research plan

Transcripts, certificates, references and — for research students — a detailed research plan.

  4. 04.Examination and interview

The embassy route runs written papers, then an interview and the final nomination.
