BCS Mental Ability Preparation

বাংলায় পড়তে চাও? দেখো: বিসিএস মানসিক দক্ষতা প্রস্তুতি

Mental ability does not test knowledge; it tests how fast you think. Practice therefore matters far more than reading, and practice means many questions of the same type rather than variety.

The question types

TypeWhat it tests
Verbal reasoningRelationships and analogies between words
Number seriesFinding the rule behind a sequence
Spatial relationsRotated and mirrored shapes
Mechanical reasoningHow simple mechanisms behave
Spelling and languageRecognising the correct form

Drilling type by type

Solving mental ability questions at random improves you slowly. Take one type, work fifty of them together, then move on. Consecutive questions of one type let the brain extract the rule by itself, after which answers arrive without deliberation.

For number series, get into the habit of testing three relations first — differences, multiples and squares. Most sequences fall into one of them.

Spatial and non-verbal questions

Many find this the hardest part, because there is no language in it, only shape. There is one remedy — draw it. Sketching the rotated or mirrored figure yourself makes the pattern obvious quickly, and after a few weeks the sketching is no longer needed.

Managing the clock in the hall

  1. Clear the familiar types first, leave the unfamiliar for later.
  2. No more than twenty seconds on one question — otherwise move on.
  3. On spatial questions, match a marker rather than rotating mentally.
  4. If time remains at the end, return to what you skipped.

The marks for mental ability are set in the commission’s circular; verify from the circular for your own BCS.
