How to read a complete work
- Read the whole thing through once without taking notes.
- Then list the characters and how each relates to the others.
- Lay the events out in sequence on a line.
- On the second reading, look for what the writer is saying.
How the questions come
Questions from this book usually circle character, event and significance — why someone acted as they did, what lay behind an event, what the work as a whole is saying. A stimulus-based question asks you to find the parallel between the situation given and a character or event in the text, so knowing the characters well makes the answer much easier.
