How should I teach history?

As a story — someone wanted something, met an obstacle, and then this happened. At this age children remember tales, not dates.

Do dates need memorising?

Not now. Build the order first — what came before what. The dates settle easily later.

I am not good at telling stories — what then?

The book is already written as story. Read it aloud, then ask what they would have done.

How to help at home

Tell the lesson as a story before reading it out.
Ask what they would have done.
Let them hear older relatives’ stories.
Show the places on a map.

Do not press on dates

Memorising dates has little value at this age, because "a hundred years ago" and "five hundred years ago" feel much the same distance to a child. What needs building is a sense of order — what came before what. Once that exists, the dates settle in easily in later years.
