The most striking feature of Sylhet’s college roster is how many institutions there are for women. The district list carries an unusually high number of women’s colleges, and a large share of them are named after individuals or families — this region has a long tradition of schools and colleges founded on money earned abroad.

Tied to that is a second feature: the appetite for English version. Families with members abroad often want their children taught in English, so interest in English-version and English-medium institutions runs above the national average here. The two are not the same thing, though, and applying without understanding the difference leads to mistakes.

Third, Sylhet has a fair number of institutions run by the cantonment and the border guard. Their entry conditions and daily rules differ from an ordinary college’s, so read the institution’s own notice before putting one on a list.

How to use this list

If you want to study in English, first settle whether you mean English version or English medium. English version is the national curriculum and the same board examination with English as the language, and it is part of this central application. English medium is a separate system altogether, and you do not enter it through this portal.

Girls have many options in Sylhet, but the institutions are not of one standard. Rather than adding a college because its name says “women’s”, check which streams it teaches, where it is, and whether you could get there — variety on a list is good, but variety is not the same as unchecked.

Students from the division’s other three districts — Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sunamganj — also apply into the city. Pressure on the main city colleges is correspondingly high, and keeping a good college from your own district low on the list is a sensible precaution.

Class XI admission 2026-27 — the confirmed schedule

The 2026-27 admission policy was published on 24 August 2026, and applications open on 2 September 2026. A warning: many websites are still republishing last year's (2025-26) schedule as "2026-27" with only the year changed — those pages show applications opening in July, which is wrong for this cycle. Check the original notice on xiclassadmission.gov.bd before you apply.
