Choosing Your Group in Class 9 — Science, Business or Humanities?

Choosing your group in Class 9 is the biggest decision of your SSC years — it shapes not just SSC but also what you can study at HSC and university. Decide on your own interest and aptitude, not on what your friends are taking or which group people call “the good one”.
The three groups compared
| Aspect | Science | Business Studies | Humanities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Higher Maths | Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneurship | Geography, Civics, Economics, History |
| Style of study | Concepts, maths and lab work | Calculation and theory | Reading, analysis and writing |
| Time pressure | High | Moderate | Comparatively low |
| Main paths after HSC | Medicine, engineering, science and technology | BBA, banking, accountancy, CA | Law, social science, journalism, teaching, BCS |
Remember: all three groups lead to BCS, bank jobs and most government careers. The idea that only Science leads to a good career is simply wrong.
Which group suits you — the questions to ask yourself
- Do you enjoy maths and calculation, or dread it? If numbers make you uncomfortable, both Science and Business Studies will be hard.
- Do you like hands-on lab work? Almost every Science subject has a practical.
- Can you read, digest and write clearly? In Humanities, writing is the core skill.
- What do you want to become — a doctor or engineer, a businessperson or banker, or a lawyer, teacher or administrator?
- How many hours can you realistically study each day? Science is hard to do well in without steady daily work.
Can you change group later?
After choosing a group in Class 9 you can usually still change it, with your institution’s permission, up until registration. Once registration is done a change becomes complicated, because the group and subjects are fixed on the registration card.
Changing group after SSC is comparatively easy — you can move from Science into Business Studies or Humanities at HSC. The reverse, moving from Business Studies or Humanities into Science, is generally not allowed.
So starting with Science keeps more doors open — but taking Science purely to keep options open, without the interest or ability, is a mistake: a poor GPA narrows every path.
What to do in the first three months after choosing
- Get the textbooks for your new subjects and read each book’s table of contents once.
- Study the first two or three chapters very carefully — that is where the foundation is laid.
- After three months, ask yourself honestly whether you are enjoying the subjects — there may still be time to change.
- If you took Science, keep the practical notebooks up to date from day one rather than letting them pile up.
Frequently asked questions
There is no single best group — the best one is whichever matches your interest, your comfort with maths and your future plans. A strong career is possible from all three.
Absolutely. For the general cadres you can apply with a degree from any group — and much of the BCS preliminary and written syllabus maps directly onto Humanities subjects.
Yes — at HSC you can move from Science into Business Studies or Humanities. Moving from Business Studies or Humanities into Science is generally not permitted.
