What the job actually involves

Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.

Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.

  • Operate computer-assisted engineering or design software or equipment to perform engineering tasks.
  • Confer with engineers, customers, or others to discuss existing or potential engineering projects or products.

What makes a strong electrical engineer resume

Name your domain in the first line. "Power systems engineer" or "embedded hardware engineer" tells a reader more than any summary paragraph, and prevents your resume being read against the wrong bar.

Give project scale with units. Voltage levels, load in MW or kVA, board complexity in layers and component count, or firmware footprint — engineering readers calibrate on numbers, and vague scope reads as junior.

State your PE status honestly and in context. EIT after passing the FE, PE if licensed, or neither. It is close to essential in power and consulting, common in utilities, and largely irrelevant in product design — so say where you sit rather than leaving it out.

Show design ownership through to validation. Schematic through layout through bring-up and test, or calculations through drawings through commissioning. Engineers who only design and never see something built are read differently from those who close the loop.

Adapting this electrical engineer example

"Engineer of record" is the phrase that carries this resume, and it is a legal status rather than a seniority label. Only a licensed PE can stamp drawings and accept responsibility for them, so stating that you served as engineer of record on four projects tells a firm you can sign work — which determines whether they can bill your time as design authority or only as support. It is the single most valuable thing a licensed engineer can say.

Voltage class and project scale are quoted together — 480V to 34.5kV, projects up to 25 MW — because power engineering divides sharply by both. Distribution design at 25 MW for a data centre is a different discipline from residential or building-services work, and a firm bidding industrial projects screens for the higher class specifically. Naming ETAP alongside the study types (load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination) does the same job: the software is a proxy for the analysis you have actually performed.

The vendor-submittal bullet is the quiet standout. Catching a transformer impedance mismatch during review is exactly the kind of error that is cheap to fix on paper and extremely expensive after energisation, and it demonstrates that submittal review is being done properly rather than rubber-stamped. Pair it with the commissioning line — resolving three protection misoperations before handover — and you have two independent pieces of evidence that your designs get checked against reality.

Note how the licence chain is presented: FE passed in 2017, PE held now. That progression is how engineering careers are read, and stating both is normal rather than redundant — the FE date tells a reader when you entered the pipeline and the PE tells them where you are now. If you are still an EIT, say so plainly with your FE year and expected PE sitting; firms hire at that stage constantly and the honest version is what gets you the interview.

Certification, licensing and what employers verify

The licence path is FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) shortly after graduation, then a period of qualifying experience — typically four years under a licensed PE — then the PE exam. An ABET-accredited degree is a prerequisite in most states, which is why it is worth naming.

Whether the PE matters depends entirely on domain. It is effectively required to stamp drawings in consulting, building services and public infrastructure; common in utilities; and largely irrelevant in consumer electronics, semiconductors and embedded product work, where nobody stamps anything.

Domain credentials can carry more weight than the PE in industry: certified energy manager, functional-safety certification for automotive or industrial systems, or vendor certifications on specific PLC and SCADA platforms. Match the credential to the domain rather than collecting generally.

Mistakes that cost electrical engineers interviews

  • Not naming the domain, so your resume is read against the wrong expectations.
  • Omitting voltages, power ratings or board complexity — the units engineering readers calibrate on.
  • Being ambiguous about PE status, which is a defined legal credential rather than a seniority marker.
  • Listing tools without the designs they produced, when the tool is assumed and the judgement is not.
  • Stopping at design with no mention of test, bring-up or commissioning.

The individual contributor path runs senior, staff and principal engineer, with increasing technical authority. The management path runs engineering manager and director. In consulting, the PE and then principal or partner status is the ladder. Domain switching is hardest here of any occupation in this estate — power and embedded engineers rarely cross over — so the specialisation choice is a long one.
