Machinist Resume Examples
A machinist resume is read on three facts: which machines and controls you run, what tolerances you hold, and whether you set up or only operate. A shop manager can staff a cell from those three, and a resume that gives none of them is indistinguishable from every other application in the folder.
Setup is the dividing line. An operator loading and unloading a running job and a machinist who reads the print, builds the work holding, proves out the program and signs the first article are paid differently and hired differently, and the page should settle which you are in the opening line.

What the job actually involves
Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.
Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.
- Calculate dimensions or tolerances, using instruments, such as micrometers or vernier calipers.
- Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
- Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
- Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
- Program computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
What makes a strong machinist resume
Name the machines with their controls. "Haas VF-4 and Mazak QTN with Fanuc and Mazatrol controls" is a precise claim a shop can match against its floor; "CNC experience" is not, and controls are where the real familiarisation cost sits.
State the tolerances you routinely hold, with the inspection method. Holding ±0.0005 in verified on a CMM is a different capability from working to ±0.005 in with calipers, and shops hire specifically against it.
Say whether you programme, and how. Conversational programming at the control, editing G-code by hand, and posting from Mastercam are three different skills, and a machinist who does all three is materially more useful than one who does none.
Name the materials. Aluminium, mild steel, stainless, Inconel, titanium and plastics behave differently, and experience in the difficult ones — superalloys and hardened steels in particular — narrows the field in your favour.
Give a scrap or cycle-time figure. Both are tracked in any organised shop, and a machinist who reduced either with a named change — different insert grade, revised work holding, altered feeds and speeds — has evidence nobody else on the pile will have.
Adapting this machinist example
Machines and controls appear together in the first bullet, because a shop manager is matching against their own floor. Haas VF-series on Fanuc and Mazak QTN on Mazatrol is a specific claim that can be checked in an interview in about a minute; "CNC experience" is the version most applicants write and it survives no scrutiny at all. Controls in particular matter more than machine brand — the familiarisation cost is in the control, not the casting.
Tolerance is stated with the inspection method attached, and that pairing is what makes it credible. Anyone can claim half a thousandth; naming micrometer, height gauge and CMM first-article verification says the applicant knows how the claim would be proved. Shops hire directly against tolerance bands, so this single line places the candidate in the right band before anything else is read.
The setup-versus-operate distinction is settled in the phrase "working from print with no supervision". A setup machinist reads the drawing, builds the work holding, proves the programme and signs the first article; an operator loads and unloads. They are paid differently, and a resume that leaves it ambiguous gets the cheaper reading by default — which is a costly six words to omit.
The scrap bullet is the strongest because it names a mechanism only a machinist would produce. Redesigning soft jaws to stop deflection on the finishing pass is a real diagnosis with a real fix, and taking scrap from 6.2% to 1.4% on a repeating job is money the shop keeps every run. Most trade resumes have no numbers at all; one number with a mechanism is disproportionately memorable.

Certification, licensing and what employers verify
BLS records employers split between a high school diploma (36%) and a post-secondary certificate (33%), so a machining certificate is common rather than universal and an apprenticeship is equally respected.
NIMS credentials from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills are the recognised competency certifications and are verifiable, which matters in a field where most claims are not.
A completed apprenticeship — union or employer-run — carries substantial weight and should be named with its length and sponsor.
Quality system familiarity matters in regulated work: ISO 9001 in general manufacturing, AS9100 for aerospace, and IATF 16949 in automotive each change what documentation the job requires.
Blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to ASME Y14.5 are the substantive literacies, and worth naming explicitly rather than assuming.
Mistakes that cost machinists interviews
- Writing "CNC machinist" with no machines or controls. It is the most common opening on these resumes and it tells a shop manager nothing they can act on.
- Omitting tolerances. It is the single number that describes the precision of the work you have actually done, and shops screen on it directly.
- Blurring operating and setup. A setup machinist is a substantially more valuable hire, and leaving it ambiguous means the reader assumes the cheaper interpretation.
- Listing every material ever cut. Naming the difficult ones is the point; a long list dilutes them and invites a question about the ones you touched once.
- Ignoring inspection. A machinist who can prove the part is good — micrometer, height gauge, CMM, comparator — is worth more than one who makes chips and hands it to quality.
