Sales Representative Resume Examples
A sales resume is judged on quota attainment above everything else. Percentage of quota, in dollars, for each of the last three years is the first thing a sales manager looks for — and a resume that describes responsibilities instead of results is read as someone who did not hit their number.
After attainment, the shape of the business matters: territory, average deal size, sales cycle length and the split between new business and account management. A rep closing twenty $40,000 deals and one closing two $400,000 deals are doing different jobs at the same revenue.

Sales Representative pay, demand and entry requirements
Before the resume, the market. These are the national figures for sales representatives, and they matter because they tell you what you are competing for and how many other applicants are competing with you.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median annual wage | $72,080 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) |
| People employed nationally | 1,238,190 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) |
| Projected growth, 2024–2034 | Little or no change |
| Projected annual openings | 114,800 |
| Typical entry-level education | Varies — high school diploma for some roles, a bachelor's degree for others |
| BLS SOC code | 41-4012 |

What the job actually involves
Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.
Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.
- Answer customers' questions about products, prices, availability, product uses, and credit terms.
- Recommend products to customers, based on customers' needs and interests.
- Estimate or quote prices, credit or contract terms, warranties, and delivery dates.
- Consult with clients after sales or contract signings to resolve problems and to provide ongoing support.
- Prepare sales contracts and order forms.
- Provide customers with product samples and catalogs.
What makes a strong sales representative resume
Give quota attainment by year, as a percentage and in dollars. "142% of a $1.8M quota in 2025, 118% in 2024, 106% in 2023" is the strongest opening available in sales, and three years of it is far more persuasive than one good year.
Describe the territory and the segment. Geography, vertical, account count and whether it was an existing book or a new patch — inheriting a mature territory and building one from nothing are different achievements.
State average deal size and sales cycle. They tell a manager whether your experience maps onto their motion, and a rep moving from short-cycle transactional selling into enterprise is making a bigger jump than the revenue suggests.
Split new business from renewals. Hunting and farming are different skills with different comp plans, and a manager hiring for one wants to know which you have actually done.
Include margin or discounting where you can. A rep who hits quota at list is worth substantially more than one who buys the number with discount, and almost nobody addresses it.
Adapting this sales representative example
Three years of quota attainment appear in the first bullet with the quota dollars attached, and the three-year span is doing most of the persuading. One good year can be territory luck, a large renewal or a favourable comp plan; 106%, 118% and 142% in sequence is a trend, and sales managers read trends because they are trying to predict next year rather than admire last year.
The new-business split is given as a movement rather than a level. Growing new business from 22% to 41% of territory revenue says this rep did not simply harvest an inherited book, and naming the mechanism — a protected eight-hour prospecting block and a distributor referral programme — makes it a repeatable practice rather than a lucky patch. Managers hiring hunters versus farmers screen on exactly this line.
The discount figure is the rarest thing on the page and possibly the most valuable. Hitting quota at a 4% average discount against a territory average of 9% means this rep sold on value rather than buying the number with margin, and on a $1.8M quota that difference is roughly $90,000 of gross profit. Almost no sales resume addresses discounting, which is precisely why it distinguishes.
Retention is stated through a stress event. Ninety-four per cent by revenue is respectable; ninety-four per cent *through an 11% supplier price increase that competitors used as an opening* is evidence about relationship depth that no ordinary retention number carries. The ranking and President's Club lines close the page with the two claims a manager can verify in a single phone call.
Every detail in the document above is invented. Never send an example with placeholder facts left in it.
Keywords an applicant tracking system will look for
Most employers of sales representatives screen applications through software before a person reads them. The scan is looking for the vocabulary of the job, so the terms below are worth using where they are true of you — and worth leaving out where they are not, because the human read that follows will catch the difference.
- quota attainment · territory · annual revenue · new business · account retention · average deal size · sales cycle length · pipeline · win rate · prospecting · cold outreach · CRM · Salesforce · HubSpot · account management · B2B sales · distributor · channel sales · RFP response · contract negotiation · margin · cross-sell · upsell · President's Club · forecast accuracy
Systems and software worth naming if you have used them: Salesforce, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Zoom.
Certification, licensing and what employers verify
BLS records mixed entry requirements — a high school diploma for some roles and a bachelor's degree for others — which makes the attainment record the real credential.
Technical product knowledge is the substantive qualification in most wholesale and manufacturing sales, and any manufacturer or product certification is worth naming.
Sales methodology training — Challenger, MEDDIC, Sandler, SPIN — is common and signals a structured approach, particularly for enterprise roles.
CRM fluency is assumed rather than credited, though a rep who has administered or reported from the system rather than only entered activity into it is distinguishable.
Industry certifications matter in regulated or technical verticals: medical device, pharmaceutical, building products and industrial equipment each have their own.
Mistakes that cost sales representatives interviews
- Omitting quota attainment. In a field where the number is the job, its absence is read as a number not worth stating.
- Giving revenue without quota. Two million dollars against a $1.5M quota and against a $3M quota are opposite outcomes, and revenue alone conceals which.
- Describing responsibilities. Prospecting, quoting and managing accounts are the job description; attainment, growth and retention are the record.
- Ignoring the composition of the number. A quota hit entirely on one renewal is a different achievement from one built across fifteen new logos, and managers ask.
- Claiming President's Club without the year and the ranking. It is verifiable and specific, so state it precisely or leave it out.
Where this role leads next
Senior and strategic account roles take on larger, more complex accounts with longer cycles, and hire on deal size and on navigating multiple stakeholders.
Sales management is the standard promotion and is a genuine change of job — hiring, coaching, forecasting and pipeline discipline rather than personal selling.
Sales engineering and solutions consulting suit reps with deep technical product knowledge, and trade commission upside for a larger base.
Channel and distribution management moves from selling direct to managing partners who sell, and values anyone who has worked through a distributor network.
Frequently asked questions
Quota attainment as a percentage and in dollars, for three years. One good year can be territory luck or a large renewal; a three-year trend is what a sales manager reads, because they are predicting next year rather than admiring last year.
Because $2M against a $1.5M quota and against a $3M quota are opposite outcomes. Revenue without the quota conceals which one happened, and managers assume the less flattering reading.
If you can, yes — almost nobody does. Hitting quota at a 4% average discount against a 9% territory average means you sold on value rather than buying the number with margin, and on a $1.8M quota that is roughly $90,000 of gross profit.
Through a stress event. Ninety-four per cent retention is respectable; the same figure held through a double-digit price increase competitors used as an opening is evidence about relationship depth that an ordinary number cannot carry.
The BLS OEWS May 2025 median annual wage for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives is $72,080, against employment of about 1,238,190. O*NET projects little or no change for 2024–2034, with roughly 114,800 annual openings.
