Model: “Overall, coffee consumption rose steadily across the period, overtaking tea around 2012, whereas tea consumption declined gradually after an initial peak.” A strong overview names the main trend and the biggest comparison without specific numbers.
IELTS Academic Writing Task 1
You describe visual information — a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map or process — in at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. You must report and compare the key features; do not give opinions or reasons.
A reliable structure
- Introduction — paraphrase what the visual shows (do not copy the prompt).
- Overview — 2–3 sentences on the biggest trends or differences (this is essential for Band 7+).
- Detail paragraph 1 — describe and compare one group of data with figures.
- Detail paragraph 2 — describe and compare the rest.
Key language for trends
- Rise: increase, grow, climb, surge, rocket
- Fall: decrease, decline, drop, plunge, dip
- No change: remain stable, level off, plateau
- Degree: sharply, steadily, gradually, slightly
No. Academic Task 1 is a factual report. Do not add opinions, reasons or a separate conclusion — the overview does that job.
