IELTS Academic Task 1: How to Describe a Map
Describe changes between two maps (or locations on one) using positions and the passive for changes.
Structure
- Introduction — paraphrase what the visual shows.
- Overview — the 2–3 biggest features or trends (essential for Band 7+).
- Detail paragraph 1 — describe and compare the main data with figures.
- Detail paragraph 2 — cover the rest.
Useful language
- to the north / south-east of
- was replaced by / demolished
- a new … was built
- the area became more developed
At least 150 words in about 20 minutes. Aim for 160–190 words with a clear overview.
