Discussion + opinion: a view on longer sentences, a view on prevention, and an opinion favouring rehabilitation.
IELTS Writing Task 2: Reducing Crime: Prison or Education
Question. Some people believe that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others think there are better alternatives. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 9 model answer
How best to reduce crime is a long-standing debate. While some favour tougher prison sentences, others prefer preventive measures; I believe education and rehabilitation are ultimately more effective.
Advocates of harsh sentencing argue that it deters offenders and protects the public. If criminals know they face many years in prison, some may be discouraged, and dangerous individuals are kept off the streets.
However, prison alone rarely addresses the causes of crime. Poverty, poor education and lack of opportunity drive many people to offend, and without rehabilitation, released prisoners often reoffend. Investing in schooling, job training and community programmes tackles these roots directly.
In conclusion, although imprisonment has a role for serious offenders, I believe that education and rehabilitation offer a more lasting solution to crime than simply lengthening sentences.
