IELTS Writing Task 2: Care for the Elderly

Question. In some countries, the proportion of elderly people is rising. Some think families should care for older relatives, while others believe it is the state’s responsibility. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 9 model answer

As populations age, societies must decide who should care for the elderly. This essay examines the roles of families and the state before arguing that both must share the duty.

Supporters of family care stress emotional and cultural value. In many societies, including Bangladesh, caring for parents is a deep tradition, and older people are usually happiest surrounded by relatives who understand their needs and history.

Others argue that the state is better equipped for the practical burden. Modern medical needs can be complex and expensive, and working families often lack the time and expertise; government pensions, hospitals and care homes provide a reliable safety net that no single family can match.

In my opinion, the ideal is a partnership: families should provide love and daily support while the state supplies healthcare and financial help, ensuring older citizens are cared for with both dignity and security.
