A discussion essay: an introduction with a thesis, one paragraph per view, and a conclusion giving a balanced personal opinion.
IELTS Writing Task 2: Free University Education
Question. Some people think university education should be free for all students. Others believe students should pay their own tuition. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Band 9 model answer
Whether higher education should be publicly funded or paid for by students is widely debated. This essay will examine both positions before arguing that a means-tested system is the fairest solution.
Those who favour free education argue that it widens access and benefits society. When cost is removed, talented students from poor families can attend, producing the doctors, engineers and teachers a country needs. Supporters see education as a public good, like healthcare, that should not depend on wealth.
On the other hand, opponents point out that free tuition is expensive and is ultimately funded by taxpayers, many of whom never attend university. They argue that graduates earn more over their lifetimes and can reasonably be asked to contribute, and that fees encourage students to value their studies.
In my view, the strongest approach combines both. Tuition should be free or heavily subsidised for low-income students while wealthier families contribute, ensuring both fairness and financial sustainability.
