Agree essay: a clear position, two supporting reasons (reduced demand, useful revenue), and a qualified conclusion.
IELTS Writing Task 2: Taxing Unhealthy Food
Question. Some people think governments should tax unhealthy foods to improve public health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 9 model answer
Faced with rising obesity, some governments are considering taxes on unhealthy food and drink. I largely agree with this policy, because it can both discourage harmful consumption and fund healthcare, although it must be applied carefully.
The main benefit is that higher prices reduce demand for damaging products. When sugary drinks become more expensive, many consumers switch to healthier alternatives, as has been seen in countries that introduced a sugar tax. Over time, this can lower rates of diabetes and heart disease.
Furthermore, the revenue raised can be reinvested in public health — funding hospitals, subsidising fruit and vegetables, or running awareness campaigns. In this way the tax tackles the problem from two directions at once.
In conclusion, while such a tax should not unfairly burden the poor, I believe that taxing unhealthy food is a justified and effective tool for improving a nation’s health.
