Is counting on fingers a problem?

Not at this age. Fingers make an abstract number tangible, and with practice the child drops them on their own.

Put sums into daily life — how many rotis are left.
When an answer is wrong, ask how they worked it out.
Praise getting it right rather than getting it fast.

Worrying about finger counting

Many guardians see a child counting on fingers and want it stopped. At this age the fingers are a legitimate tool — they make an abstract number something you can hold. With practice the child drops them on their own, because the small sums become known by heart. Forcing the fingers away early produces errors and a loss of confidence instead.
