Multiplication and division arrive in class 3, and both rest on the previous two years of addition and subtraction. Multiplication is repeated addition and division repeated subtraction — grasp that relationship and learning the tables becomes far easier.
How they stand on what came before
Show a child that three taken four times makes twelve and "three fours are twelve" stops being a string of sounds and becomes a picture. Once the picture exists, a forgotten table can be reconstructed. Memorised without it, a forgotten table leaves nothing to fall back on.

How to help at home
- Show it with objects before asking for the table.
- One table over several days, not all at once.
- Show division as sharing into equal parts.
- Put multiplication and division into shopping and cooking.
The order to teach tables in
Not all tables are equally hard. Two, five and ten are easiest because their pattern is visible; three and four come next; seven and eight are hardest. Teaching the easy ones first builds confidence, and the hard ones stop being frightening. Pushing all of them at once produces the opposite.
