I cannot explain fractions — what helps?

How do I teach measurement?

By doing it at home — measuring with a tape, weighing, telling the time. Without that it is needlessly hard.

The biggest step in class 4 mathematics is fractions. Until now a number meant whole things; now, for the first time, part of a thing has to be worked with — and that idea is genuinely hard for many children.

Why fractions feel hard

A fraction has two numbers yet names one thing, and a larger denominator means a smaller part — both of which invert everything learned so far. The child has learned that a bigger number means more; now they hear that a quarter is less than a half. That is where the confusion comes from, and the only remedy is showing it with things you can hold.

How to help at home

Show fractions by folding a roti or a sheet of paper.
Divide the same thing into two and into four, then compare.
Let them measure while cooking — half a cup, a quarter.
Have them draw it before moving to numerals.

Measurement arrives too

Length, weight and time gain weight this year, and they are easier than fractions because they are entirely concrete. Measuring with a tape at home, weighing on a scale, telling the time from a clock — let the child do these and the chapter more or less finishes itself. Learning measurement from a book alone is needlessly hard.
