What GPA Each College Needs — Reading the Numbers

"What GPA does this college need?" is the most-searched question of the admission season. The answer is less simple than it looks, because two different numbers travel under the same name.
One is the minimum eligibility — the GPA below which a college will not accept an application at all. The other is the real cut-off — the lowest GPA actually admitted. The second is almost always higher than the first.
The difference between the two numbers
| Minimum eligibility | Actual cut-off | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it | The college, announced in advance | Nobody — it emerges from the volume of applications |
| When you know it | Before you apply | Only after the result |
| What it tells you | Whether you may apply | Whether you would actually have got in |
So do not read "needs GPA 5" as "GPA 5 gets you in". At the top colleges, GPA-5 applicants outnumber the seats several times over.
Where the figures actually come from
Per-college minimum GPAs are published in the central portal’s college list, afresh each session. Everything written online about "what GPA each college needs" ultimately comes from it.
Which is this season’s problem: the 2026-27 admission policy was published on 24 August 2026, but the college-wise GPA list arrives separately — in the portal's college list during the application window. Any site showing "2026-27 GPA requirements" today is showing an earlier year’s numbers.
What to realistically expect from your own GPA
Even without the exact figures you can reason usefully, because the shape of demand does not change much from year to year.
- At the leading colleges, Science effectively requires a GPA of 5.
- At the same college, Business Studies and Humanities usually sit lower.
- Outside Dhaka, and at district level, good colleges are less contested and the odds are better.
- Government colleges cost less but are often more contested for that reason.
The 2026-27 admission policy was published on 24 August 2026, but the board can still revise dates or figures in a later notice. Check the latest notice on xiclassadmission.gov.bd before you apply. The information on this page was last verified on 28 August 2026.
Frequently asked questions
The admission policy was published on 24 August 2026, but per-college minimum GPAs do not come with it — they appear in the central portal's college list once applications open (2 September 2026). Anything you see before then is from an earlier year.
Yes, and it happens every year at the top colleges. Meeting the minimum earns you the right to apply, not a seat.
In central selection the GPA is the basis, with ties broken by rules in the policy. At own-test colleges it is the written paper that does most of the separating.
Start with strong colleges in your own area, and keep at least two near the bottom of your list where a place is close to certain.
