A CNA resume example built on resident load, setting and the physical realities of the job, with current BLS pay and demand figures and the certification employers verify with the state registry.

Certified Nursing Assistant Resume Examples

A CNA resume is judged on load and setting before anything else. How many residents you carry on a shift, at what acuity, and where — because 12 residents on a memory care unit and 12 on an assisted living hall are not the same shift, and a director of nursing knows it.

The second thing that matters is whether your bullets describe care or describe duties. "Assisted residents with ADLs" is on every CNA resume ever written. "Primary aide for 12 residents on a locked dementia unit, including four two-person transfers" is not.

What the job actually involves

Hiring managers read a resume against the work, so it helps to be precise about what the work is. These are the task statements the US Department of Labor publishes for this occupation.

Read them as a checklist. Anything on this list you have genuinely done belongs on your resume in the language a recruiter already recognises, and anything you have not done should be left off rather than softened into something that sounds close.

  • Provide physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising.
  • Turn or reposition bedridden patients.
  • Answer patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients’ needs.
  • Measure and record food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.
  • Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses.
  • Feed patients or assist patients to eat or drink.
  • Review patients’ dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences to ensure patient receives appropriate diet.

What makes a strong certified nursing assistant resume

Give the resident-to-aide ratio. It is the number that determines what the job is actually like, it varies enormously between facilities, and stating yours tells an employer immediately whether their floor will feel familiar or overwhelming.

Name the population. Dementia and memory care, post-surgical rehab, bariatric residents, hospice and paediatric home care each demand different skills and different stamina. Employers hire for the population they have.

Write the physical work precisely. Two-person transfers, Hoyer and sit-to-stand lifts, gait belts and repositioning schedules are real competencies with injury consequences, and a facility with a safe-lifting programme screens for them directly.

Include your prevention record where you have one. Facilities are measured on pressure ulcers and falls, those metrics are attributable to floor staff, and a CNA who can point to a unit-level improvement is arguing on the same terms management is judged on.

Adapting this certified nursing assistant example

Nothing in this example says "assisted with ADLs", and that is the single most useful thing about it. That phrase appears on nearly every aide resume, so it distinguishes you from nobody. The example replaces it with the specifics a staffing coordinator actually weighs: how many residents, on what kind of unit, and how many two-person transfers a shift involves.

The registry line matters more than the training provider. Certification comes from a state-approved programme and a competency exam, after which your name appears on the state nurse aide registry — and that registry is what an employer checks. Listing the state and current status answers their question directly; listing the school does not. If you are returning after a break, confirm the listing is still active before applying, because a lapse can mean re-testing.

Two outcome bullets carry the page. Eleven months without a facility-acquired pressure ulcer connects repositioning work to the measure the facility is judged on, and escalating three changes in condition shows clinical observation rather than task completion. Both are the difference between an aide who performs care and one a charge nurse trusts to notice something.

Every detail in the document above is invented. Never send an example with placeholder facts left in it.

Keywords an applicant tracking system will look for

Most employers of certified nursing assistants screen applications through software before a person reads them. The scan is looking for the vocabulary of the job, so the terms below are worth using where they are true of you — and worth leaving out where they are not, because the human read that follows will catch the difference.

  • CNA · activities of daily living · ADLs · ambulation · transfers · Hoyer lift · gait belt · repositioning · pressure ulcer prevention · incontinence care · vital signs · intake and output · catheter care · feeding assistance · dementia care · behavioural redirection · fall prevention · infection control · HIPAA · charting · restorative care · range of motion · long-term care · skilled nursing · state registry

Certification, licensing and what employers verify

CNA certification comes from a state-approved training programme followed by a competency exam, and your name then appears on the state nurse aide registry. Employers check that registry, so the useful thing to put on the page is the state and current status rather than the training provider’s name.

Registry listings lapse and can carry findings. A gap in employment as an aide can mean re-testing depending on the state, and a substantiated finding of abuse or neglect stays on the registry and is visible to every prospective employer. If you are returning after a break, confirm your status is active before you apply rather than discovering it at offer stage.

Additional training is worth listing separately where you have it: dementia care, restorative aide, medication aide where your state has that certification, and hospice-specific training. Each opens a category of employer that screens for it specifically.

Mistakes that cost certified nursing assistants interviews

  • Writing "assisted with ADLs" and nothing more, which is on virtually every CNA resume and distinguishes you from none of them.
  • Leaving out the resident ratio, the single fact that tells an employer what your shift actually looked like.
  • Not naming the population, when memory care, rehab and hospice are hired for separately.
  • Skipping the physical competencies — lift types and transfer counts — at facilities that run safe-lifting programmes.
  • Listing certification without the state, when the state registry is exactly what the employer will search.

Where this role leads next

CNA is the most common entry point into nursing in the United States, and the ladder above it is short and well worn: LPN via a practical nursing programme, then RN via a bridge, with many employers offering tuition support because the retention economics work in their favour. Clinical hours as an aide count toward admission at a good number of programmes.

Staying within the aide role, the moves that pay are restorative aide, medication aide where the state allows it, and hospice or private-duty home care, which typically pays above facility work in exchange for working alone. All three reward the documented care record above, which is the practical case for keeping your own numbers rather than reconstructing them later.
