Government of Ireland Scholarship
A government award for study in Ireland — English-speaking and inside the EU. But the numbers are small: 60 places a year across every Irish institution, and the award covers one academic year.

Overview
The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) is administered by the country’s Higher Education Authority. It is for students from outside the EU and combines a €10,000 stipend with a full waiver of tuition and registration fees for one academic year.
Two things are worth knowing up front. First, there are only 60 places a year across every Irish higher education institution, so competition is severe. Second, you must already hold a conditional or final offer from an approved Irish institution when you apply — without an offer there is no application.
What the scholarship covers
- A €10,000 stipend for one academic year
- A full waiver of tuition and registration fees for that year
- An English-speaking environment, so no separate language year is needed
- A degree from an EU member state, recognised across Europe
Eligibility
- Domiciled outside the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom
- A conditional or final offer as an international fee-paying student at an approved Irish institution
- An application to an eligible full-time, in-person programme
- A strong academic record and a clear fit with the chosen programme
How to apply
The step-by-step application process for the Government of Ireland Scholarship.
01.Choose an approved institution
Work from the HEA’s list of Irish institutions and eligible programmes.
02.Secure the offer first
A conditional offer suffices, but no offer means no valid scholarship application.
03.Write the application
Set out the academic record, leadership and the case for studying in Ireland.
04.HEA selection
Selection happens nationally, and 60 places make it fiercely competitive.
Application cycles
Each cycle has its own page with that round’s dates, figures and changes — kept in step with the official notice.
Frequently asked questions
No, and it is important to be clear about it. The award runs for one academic year. On a one-year master’s that effectively covers the whole programme, but on a bachelor’s or any multi-year course you must fund the remaining years yourself.
