Past Admission Questions — How to Actually Use Them

Past papers are the single most reliable resource for admission preparation — more than any guide book or coaching sheet. The style of question, the level of difficulty and which chapters carry the questions are all visible only there.
Where to find them
- The university’s own admission website — many publish papers and answer keys.
- The cluster’s official site carries unit-wise papers and solutions.
- Published admission question-bank books, arranged by university and year.
- Collections held by older students and your college library.
- For medical and the agricultural cluster, the admission committee’s own publications.
Solutions circulating online are not always correct. Cross-check against at least two sources, and settle any doubt with the textbook.
Turning past papers into priorities
- Gather five to ten years of papers for one subject.
- Draw a grid with chapters down the left and years across the top.
- Mark which chapter each question came from.
- Count them up: the chapters that recur most are your priorities.
- Note the difficulty too, so you know where a formula suffices and where deeper understanding is needed.
How to sit a model test properly
- Sit it against the clock, in one go, for the full duration — stopping midway defeats the purpose.
- If the test has negative marking, score yourself under that rule.
- Afterwards, list every mistake and why it happened: a concept gap, time pressure or carelessness?
- If the same kind of mistake repeats, go back to the textbook for that chapter.
- At least one full model test a week, rising to two or three in the final two months.
The analysis after a test matters more than the test. Without it, ten tests will not move your score.
