About St. Joseph Higher Secondary School

It is a comparatively small college — around seven hundred students are admitted a year, against more than three thousand at Notre Dame. Smaller cohorts mean more attention per student in class and easier access to lab time.

Science runs in both Bangla medium and an English version, and the college carries two separate codes — 1204 for Science and 1899 for Business Studies. For students around Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi it is one of the first names on the list.

Those two separate codes cause confusion at application time. A code is not a ranking or a quality mark — it simply identifies the stream. Science applicants use 1204 and Business Studies applicants 1899; apply under the wrong one and it counts as an application to that other stream.

Because the name ends in "Higher Secondary School", people often assume it is a school rather than a college. In Bangladesh an institution named that way teaches Classes XI and XII — so in what it actually does it is a college; only the naming convention differs.

St. Joseph runs a 100-mark written admission test. Applicants are first screened on their SSC result; those selected sit the paper, and the final merit list combines the SSC result with the test score.
