Formative assessment examples that take under five minutes each, what separates them from summative assessment, and how to act on what you find within the same lesson.

Formative Assessment Examples

Formative assessment is any check whose result changes what you do next. That is the entire definition, and it is why a quiz can be formative in one classroom and summative in another.

The distinction is not the instrument. It is whether the information is used, and used soon enough to matter — a diagnosis in October that changes nothing until January was not formative.

The examples below are chosen for one property: each takes under five minutes and produces information you can act on before the lesson ends.

Formative and summative are uses, not tools

Summative assessment measures what has been learned at the end of something, for a grade or a record. Formative assessment gathers information during learning, to steer it.

The same twenty-question test can be either. Given at the end of a unit and recorded, it is summative. Given midway, sorted for the two questions most people missed, and used to plan the next lesson, it is formative — and the marks may never be recorded at all.

This matters practically because teachers frequently believe they do a lot of formative assessment when what they do is collect a lot of data. The test is whether the next lesson was different because of it. If it would have been identical either way, the assessment was summative regardless of what it was called.

Eight checks that take under five minutes

The hinge question is the most powerful and the hardest to write. Each distractor has to correspond to a specific way of being wrong, so the distribution of answers tells you which misconception is in the room rather than merely how many are lost.

  • Cold call with wait time — ask, pause four seconds, then name. Sampling, not volunteering.
  • Show-me boards — every student answers simultaneously and you read the room in one glance.
  • Two truths and a lie about the concept, written by students in pairs.
  • Hinge question — one multiple-choice item where each wrong option maps to a specific misconception.
  • Think-pair-share, with you circulating to listen rather than to supervise.
  • Traffic-light margins — students mark each practice question green, amber or red as they go.
  • Worked-example critique — a solution with one error, and students find it.
  • One-sentence summary, but constrained: use these three words, in fifteen words or fewer.

Worked example: a hinge question

Concept: adding fractions with unlike denominators. Question: which is equal to 1/2 + 1/3?

A) 2/5 — the student added numerators and denominators separately. This is the dominant misconception and the reason the question exists.

B) 5/6 — correct.

C) 2/6 — the student found a common denominator but then added numerators without converting.

D) 1/6 — the student multiplied instead of adding.

What the distribution tells you: heavy A means reteach what a denominator represents, using a diagram rather than a procedure. Heavy C means the concept is intact and the procedure has a specific step missing, which is a five-minute fix. Heavy D means confusion between operations, which is a different lesson. Scattered across all three means the class is not ready to practise and the lesson plan changes now.

A single well-built question distinguishing three misconceptions is worth more than twenty questions that only count right answers.

The student names, scores and incidents in this example are invented composites. Nothing here describes a real child.

Acting on it inside the lesson

The hardest part is not gathering the information; it is having somewhere to go when it turns out badly, with thirty students waiting.

Plan two branches. Before the lesson, decide what happens if the check goes well and what happens if it does not, and have both ready. That is a five-minute planning cost and it is what makes stopping possible — teachers push on through a failed check mainly because there is nothing else prepared.

The branch that matters is the not-well one, and it should not be a repeat. A different representation, a worked pair, a step backwards to the prerequisite. If your fallback is to explain it again more slowly, the check has told you something you have no way to use.

Making it visible to students

Formative assessment works considerably better when students know what it is for, and it is easy to make it look like surveillance if that is never said.

Tell them plainly: this is not marked, it tells me what to teach next, and getting it wrong here is useful. Classes that believe this give honest answers; classes that suspect a hidden grade give safe ones, and safe answers are worthless.

Traffic-light and confidence marking work on the same logic — a student marking their own uncertainty is giving you information they alone have. That only happens where admitting uncertainty is free.

What not to do with the data

  • Do not record it in the gradebook. It converts the check into a summative one and the honesty stops immediately.
  • Do not collect it and act next week. Information that arrives after the moment has passed is a record, not a check.
  • Do not check everything. Two or three deliberate checks per lesson beat continuous monitoring nobody acts on.
  • Do not use volunteers as the sample. The hands that go up are the least representative group in the room.
  • Do not treat a failed check as a failed lesson. It is the check doing exactly what it was for.
