Nursing Admission Guide

Nursing is a secure and respected profession in health care, and admission is less fiercely contested than medicine. Government nursing colleges and institutes admit through the central test run by the nursing and midwifery directorate.

The two main routes

CourseDurationEligibility (broadly)
BSc in Nursing (bachelor’s)4 yearsHSC science group, with Biology
Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery3 yearsHSC in any group, subject to conditions
Diploma in Midwifery3 yearsHSC, subject to conditions

The BSc requires the science group with Biology, but the diploma courses are open to other groups too — the route’s main advantage.

The test and its marks

  • The test is MCQ-based, and your SSC and HSC GPA also count towards the final score.
  • Questions come from Bangla, English, general knowledge, mathematics and science, weighted towards Biology.
  • The weighting differs between the BSc and diploma papers, with more science in the BSc.
  • Applications are online and the merit list is published centrally.
  • Colleges and institutes are allotted from your merit position and preferences.

Mark distributions, eligibility rules and fees are revised almost every year. Always cross-check against the current official circular from the university or admission committee before you apply.

Where nursing leads

  • Appointment as a senior staff nurse in government hospitals, through non-BCS public recruitment.
  • Wide opportunities in private hospitals and clinics.
  • Strong overseas demand, especially in the Middle East, Europe and Australia.
  • Higher study: an MSc in Nursing and specialist courses.
  • Roles in public health, NGOs and international development agencies.
