Admission Eligibility and GPA Requirements

The first hurdle is not the test but eligibility — your SSC and HSC GPA, and whether you studied the required subjects. If your GPA falls short, good preparation cannot help, because you cannot even apply.
Minimum GPA for the major tests
| Test | Group | Minimum GPA (each exam) | Combined GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| GST — Unit A | Science | 3.50 | 8.00 |
| GST — Unit B | Humanities | 3.00 | 6.00 |
| GST — Unit C | Business Studies | 3.00 | 6.50 |
| Dhaka University — Science unit | Science | 3.50 | 8.00 |
| Medical and dental | Science, with Biology | 4.00 | 9.00 |
These figures come from recent circulars. Every university and unit sets its own threshold and revises it most years — check your own unit against the current circular.
Compulsory-subject requirements
- Medical and dental: you must have taken Biology at HSC, and Biology carries its own minimum-GPA condition.
- Engineering (BUET, CKRUET, DUET): Higher Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are required.
- Architecture: Higher Mathematics plus a separate freehand-drawing test.
- Agricultural cluster: Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics.
- Fine-arts units: a practical drawing test alongside the general paper.
- English departments and some subjects set a separate minimum mark in English.
What to do if your GPA falls short
- Check each university separately — where one needs 3.50, another accepts 3.00.
- The cluster’s B and C units have looser thresholds, so there may be room there.
- Science students can often apply to humanities or business units too, where that is permitted.
- National University honours programmes and private universities have far more relaxed requirements.
- An HSC improvement exam is another option — but many universities restrict applications from improvement candidates.
Mark distributions, eligibility rules and fees are revised almost every year. Always cross-check against the current official circular from the university or admission committee before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on the unit and university. The cluster’s science unit typically needs 3.50 in each of SSC and HSC with 8.00 combined; humanities 3.00 and 6.00; medical 4.00 and 9.00.
Most universities count the GPA including the fourth subject, though some ask for it excluding the fourth subject. The circular states which — read it carefully.
No. A science unit requires the science group at HSC with the specific subjects. The reverse — a science student applying to a humanities or business unit — is allowed at many universities.
