“University admission test” in Bangladesh is not one exam but several separate systems. Some universities band together for a single test (the clusters), some run their own (standalone), and for medical and dental there is one central national test.
Knowing which system a university belongs to matters, because each has its own application, fee, dates and style of preparation.
Five kinds of admission test at a glance
| Type | Who runs it | The test | Official site |
|---|---|---|---|
| GST cluster | 22–24 general and science-technology universities | One test in three units (A/B/C), 100-mark MCQ | gstadmission.ac.bd |
| Agricultural cluster | Nine agricultural and agri-technology universities | A single 100-mark MCQ test | admission-agri.org |
| Combined engineering (CKRUET) | CUET, KUET and RUET | One combined test | ckruet.ac.bd |
| Medical and dental | The health-education directorate (one national test) | A 100-mark MCQ plus GPA marks | dgme.gov.bd |
| Standalone | DU, RU, CU, JU, BUET, BUTEX, IUT, BUP and others | Each university’s own test and mark scheme | The university’s own site |
The cluster membership changes yearly — universities join and leave. Always check the current year’s list before applying.
Cluster versus standalone — the trade-off
| Consideration | Cluster test | Standalone test |
|---|---|---|
| Number of tests | One test, many universities | A separate test for each |
| Cost and travel | Lower — one application, one centre | Higher — a fee and a trip for each |
| Risk | One bad day affects every university in it | A bad day in one still leaves the others |
| Preparation | One syllabus and pattern | Preparing for each pattern separately |
| Seats | Combined seats across many universities | Only that university’s seats |
Practical advice: apply to the cluster as your safety net and sit two to four standalone tests as well. Relying on a single system is the biggest risk you can take.
Which route leads where
- To become a doctor → the medical and dental admission test (Biology required).
- To become an engineer → BUET, CKRUET, DUET, IUT, BUTEX (Higher Mathematics required).
- Agriculture, fisheries or veterinary science → the agricultural cluster.
- General subjects (science, arts, business, law, social science) → DU and the other standalone universities, plus the cluster.
- Nursing and health technology → the nursing and midwifery directorate’s test.
- If nothing works out → National University honours programmes and the private universities.
Frequently asked questions
Recent years have had 22–24 universities, but the number changes annually. The current year’s final list is published at gstadmission.ac.bd.
Yes — they are separate systems and applying to one does not block the other. Most students apply to the cluster alongside DU, BUET or medical.
A merit list is built from your test score, then a university and subject are allocated based on your stated preferences and seat availability — so how you order your choices matters a great deal.
