Applying by Unit and Group

Universities admit by “unit” rather than by subject. A unit is a bundle of faculties or departments that share one admission test, and your HSC group determines which units you may apply to.

Units by group — the general picture

ScienceThe science unit, plus humanities and business units where permitted, plus fine arts
Business StudiesThe business unit, plus the humanities unit where permitted, plus fine arts
HumanitiesThe humanities unit, plus fine arts

Science students can apply to the widest range of units — the single biggest practical advantage of taking Science. But each university decides for itself whether cross-group applications are allowed.

The unit structure at Dhaka University

Dhaka University has restructured its units in recent years — the older five-unit arrangement has given way to fewer, faculty-based units, with a separate unit retained for fine arts.

The DU test has 60 MCQ marks and 40 written marks, with a further 20 marks from your SSC and HSC GPA. The science unit typically requires 3.50 in each exam and 8.00 combined.

DU’s unit count, names and seat allocation have changed from year to year. Confirm the subjects and seats per unit from the current circular — our Dhaka University pages carry the year-by-year detail.

The strategy for multiple units

  1. Apply to as many units as you are eligible for — each one is an extra chance.
  2. But be realistic when splitting your preparation time, and give the most of it to your main unit.
  3. Humanities and business units lean on Bangla, English and general knowledge — science students should study those three separately.
  4. Check in advance whether any of the exam dates clash.
  5. Fine-arts units include a practical drawing test — if that interests you, practise well ahead.
