Private-University Admission Guide

Private universities are now a large part of higher education in Bangladesh. Admission is comparatively easy, semesters start several times a year, and a good GPA earns a substantial tuition discount. But both cost and quality vary enormously between institutions, so deciding without checking is risky.

The usual process

  1. List the universities and subjects you want, and read their admission notices.
  2. Apply online or in person on campus — most allow both.
  3. Sit the entrance test or interview — many run an MCQ in English and mathematics.
  4. If selected, pay the admission and first-semester fees to confirm.
  5. A waiver or scholarship may need a separate application with your SSC and HSC marksheets.

Costing it properly — where people go wrong

Costing a private university on the per-credit fee alone is a mistake. You need the total across the whole degree.

  • The one-off admission fee, plus the per-semester fee, plus the per-credit tuition.
  • How many credits the degree requires — multiply that by the per-credit fee.
  • Lab, exam, library and other recurring charges.
  • The waiver percentage and exactly what it applies to — tuition only, or all fees.
  • The CGPA you must maintain each semester to keep the waiver — the most overlooked condition of all.
  • Transport and living costs, especially if you study in another city.

Read the waiver terms carefully: a large first-semester discount can shrink or vanish if you miss the CGPA condition, pushing the total cost far above what you budgeted.

What to verify before enrolling

  1. Whether the university is UGC-approved — confirm against the list on ugc.gov.bd.
  2. Whether your specific programme is approved — an approved university can still run unapproved programmes.
  3. Whether it has a permanent campus, and where classes actually take place.
  4. The number and qualifications of teachers, and the real state of labs and the library — visit and see.
  5. For professional programmes — pharmacy, architecture, engineering, law — whether the relevant professional council accredits it.
  6. Where its graduates are working — the most practical indicator of quality there is.

A certificate from an unapproved institution or programme is not accepted for government jobs or further study. This is the one check you must never skip.
